2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland: A Renewed EV Legend with Exasperating Twists

Published

on

Analysis: The 2024 iteration of the Tesla Model 3, dubbed Highland, revitalizes the foundational electric vehicle to new heights of excellence.

Competing car manufacturers might find comfort in the fact that CEO Elon Musk's actions appear to have curbed the expansion of Tesla's market presence, according to certain industry experts.

The Model 3 Highland stands out as an exceptional vehicle, a truly successful creation that maintains all the energy-saving features and simple charging capabilities of the earlier model, while also being more user-friendly.

However, when drawing a comparison between the automobile and Tesla's leading figure, it becomes suitable only if one can overlook certain irritating aspects of the interface, which might actually be non-negotiable for some.

I had a great time behind the wheel of the standard Model 3. It's now much quieter inside compared to other electric vehicles. The ride is more spirited and the handling has improved from its first iteration, making this pioneering electric vehicle even more attractive. It's a testament to the smart design and engineering prowess that the manufacturer is known for.

In the early months of the current year, the edition unofficially known as Highland made its debut, and it might be mistaken for a minor update at first glance. However, having had the opportunity to spend a full day test-driving one—courtesy of a Turo rental—I can now attest that it offers significantly more.

To be completely transparent, my encounter with the Model 3 took place in Southern California, an area known for its well-maintained roads, temperate climate, and a seemingly high density of Superchargers that almost rival the number of traditional fuel stations.

Upcoming 2024 version of

Taking a step back, the updated Tesla Model 3 retains the familiar silhouette we've seen since its release in 2017, including unchanged doors and side/rear design. However, the vehicle's front and rear views present a noticeably different appearance. After spending some time with the car, I remained undecided about the new rear design, particularly the revised lighting that's now integrated into the trunk. Despite my reservations, I did observe that the more pronounced crease along the front contributes to a sleeker, coupe-like profile when viewed from the front.

I had the chance to get behind the wheel of the entry-level Tesla Model 3, which was equipped with the eye-catching Ultra Red paint job, a premium choice costing an additional $2,000, and upgraded to the 19-inch Nova wheels for another $1,000. These wheels were shod with Continental ProContact tires, but they do reduce the car's EPA-rated range to 248 miles, down from the maximum 272 miles achievable with the standard 18-inch aero wheels. With these options, plus the unavoidable $1,390 for delivery and $250 as an order fee, the total came to $43,630.

The standard version of the Model 3 is equipped with an impressive array of amenities that are typically associated with the process of purchasing a high-quality vehicle: it includes a panoramic sunroof, an automated rear hatch, temperature-controlled seating for the driver and front passenger, a warming feature for the steering wheel, backseat heating capabilities, GPS, and an exclusive back display that has traditionally been exclusive to upscale luxury vehicles.

One significant technological aspect of the standard Model 3 is its energy storage system, which includes a battery pack boasting a total capacity of 60.9 kilowatt-hours (kWh) as per the Department of Energy's documentation, with an effective capacity of 57.5 kWh. These batteries are composed of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells arranged in a prismatic structure. Current information suggests that Tesla is considering transferring a portion of its battery production to the United States under the guidance of China's CATL, though currently, these components are sourced from China.

Due to the type of battery it uses, this particular version doesn't qualify for the $7,500 electric vehicle tax incentive that other Model 3 versions do, thanks to their higher percentage of American-made components. Currently, if you're able to purchase and take advantage of the tax credit, the Model 3 Long Range RWD ends up being $4,000 cheaper, though the standard Model 3 still offers a better value for those looking to lease. However, the version with the LFP battery does offer some benefits, such as Tesla's recommendation to fully charge it weekly.

From a cost perspective, setting aside the tax incentive, it's worth noting that a similarly outfitted Model 3 in a more vibrant color, and with the standard 18-inch wheels, would have a price tag of only $40,630.

Highland appears to be more polished in its construction

Upon initial inspection of the exterior, the assembly quality was impressive, with precise alignment of the trim and body panels, and the seams were uniformly narrow. Having observed numerous Model 3s closely, I can attest that prior to Highland's improvements, several exhibited notably inconsistent or broader seams. This was also true for the most recent Model 3 I had the opportunity to drive, which was a Tesla press vehicle in 2019.

When it comes to the seating in the updated Model 3, both heating and cooling functions have been added to the front seats, and pre-activation is available through the mobile app. However, when evaluating the comfort and structural support, there's room for improvement. They've made some strides since the initial Model 3, but the seats still come off as too stiff and not adequately cushioned. What they really need is enhanced contouring for the lower back and rear to maintain stability during sharp turns. The low positioning of the seats is a step in the right direction towards delivering a sporty driving experience, where you feel integrated into the car. Yet, without seats that embrace the hips, it tends to feel like you're perched on top of the car instead.

The comfort of the seats may not have seen significant enhancement, but the driving experience has transformed dramatically. The previous model was characterized by a ride that was notably rigid and constantly active, with road noise persisting despite smooth road conditions. Initially, the quiet and comfort levels felt akin to entering a high-end variant of the Model 3, which was particularly noticeable while navigating the rough side streets of Santa Monica where my journey began.

Is this the most enjoyable budget-friendly electric vehicle?

During a trip along some beloved winding routes, it became apparent that the Model 3 retains its punchy performance in its LFP variant. Ignoring price, the Model 3 – certainly, even as an entry-level model – would be among my top picks of electric vehicles for a pleasurable cruise on a twisty path.

The less potent version of the Model 3, equipped with a single permanent-magnet motor driving the rear wheels and producing 257 horsepower along with 266 pound-feet of torque, seemed faster than its advertised 0-60 mph speeds during city drives and on the winding stretches of road that were part of my route. However, when I tried to switch from the right to the left lane on an open part of US 101, it became apparent that, similar to other single-motor electric vehicles, its power deficit is noticeable at higher speeds within the speed limit.

Additionally, the car's agility and equilibrium are impressive. With a curb weight under 4,000 pounds and adjustments that enhance its agility, it seemed perfectly suited for a road that could serve as a reference for many sports cars—or the Model 3 Performance itself. The steering, which I tested in both Standard and Heavy settings (with a Light option available), had a pleasing heft to it. Notably, the Heavy setting avoided the synthetic feel that can sometimes accompany such adjustments in its return to center.

The standard version of the Model 3 isn't configured to be a high-performance vehicle, yet its handling closely resembles that of the fundamental BMW 3-Series that has been consistent for years. When you drive it more aggressively, it loses some of its precision, but it maneuvers in a stable and manageable manner.

Tesla typically nails the regenerative braking system, and their newest lineup of cars doesn't offer any alternative settings. When you let go of the accelerator in the Model 3, it decelerates rapidly, recapturing power for the battery, whereas the brake pedal is strictly for engaging the mechanical brakes. This was my initial experience with a Tesla that lacked a setting for reduced regenerative braking and didn't have the feature that simulates a rolling idle when releasing the brake.

Every aspect, from handling the wheel to accelerating and braking, as well as the movement of the car, contributes to a level of accuracy in the driving experience and the responses which is often lacking in numerous electric vehicles. It seems to embody the unified dedication of an engineering group that is perfectly aligned with their goals.

The latest design for the front suspension significantly enhances the car's precision and agility. The previous Model 3's noticeable roughness when navigating twists and turns is no longer an issue; the updated model handles unexpected dips or road surface irregularities smoothly without causing disruption. In the Highland version, Tesla has revamped the rear subframe, a critical element to the Model 3's polished performance, in addition to upgrading the bushings and incorporating frequency-selective dampers.

Putting technology to one side, the Model 3 still presents a minimalistic experience. The pleasure derived from its sporty performance, coupled with the impeccable smoothness of the ride and the quiet interior, eventually gave way to the reality of daily commutes, as I found myself uncomfortably shifting in my seat and surveying the interior materials and finishes. They have undoubtedly improved, and Tesla's decision to opt for fabric finishes over the previous wood design is a wise one. However, I'm ambivalent about the addition of multi-colored ambient lighting, a feature that appears to be becoming standard in many new, reasonably priced vehicles.

Upcoming Tesla Model 3 Release

Upon closer inspection and physical contact, the quality of the materials is noticeably superior, and the overall assembly presents a marked enhancement. However, it must be noted that when compared to other vehicles in the $40,000 range, it merely meets the standard without exceeding it. Indeed, a number of cars within this price bracket boast more appealing upholstery, finishes, and textures.

The centerpiece of the Model 3, its touchscreen, remains largely unchanged and continues to outshine many other electric vehicle interfaces, provided you're comfortable with utilizing a section of the solitary screen for instrument displays and making it the central hub for all functions. The screen's left side consistently displays velocity, safety features, and visualizations of nearby cars (with audio options situated beneath). However, navigating to the desired option is a breeze thanks to the straightforward menu layout. Additionally, a digital panel containing temperature settings, route guidance, and other essentials is permanently anchored at the screen's base.

The vehicle lacks integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which buyers must accept. However, the built-in GPS system is top-notch. Tesla offers complimentary navigation data and updates for a duration of eight years. Additionally, for enhanced features such as audio and video streaming, live camera sentry mode, among others, there's an annual fee of $99 or a monthly option of $9.99.

In a similar vein to the earlier Model 3, the new vehicle lacks traditional controls for mirror and steering wheel adjustments. Instead, these functions are managed through a somewhat cumbersome process involving the touchscreen and toggles on the steering wheel. Additionally, the vehicle offers a feature that some may consider superfluous, allowing users to digitally manipulate the air vents for desired airflow. In line with Tesla's advancement towards Full Self-Driving capabilities, the latest Model S and X have introduced a steering yoke and reduced the need for certain controls. Following this trend, the Highland model goes a step further by eliminating the turn signal and gear shift stalks altogether.

Passion for the vehicle clashes with frustration over the controls

Mastering the indicator function proves to be a challenge. The steering wheel houses two buttons designated for signaling – the upper for the right and the lower for the left. Even if one tries to envision a traditional indicator lever moving in these directions, the setup still led to mix-ups during high-pressure situations, like swiftly changing lanes on the freeway. Additionally, it appears there's no option for a quick triple-blink to signal a lane change; a full press to activate and another to deactivate is required. My experience didn't include extensive night driving, but I anticipate a similar learning curve when it comes to using the high-beam button, also located on the steering wheel.

The Tesla Model 3 scheduled for

The latest Model 3, set to release in 2024, removes the traditional gear shift stalk, a change that I grew accustomed to during a day's use. In its place, the car features a tactile section at the top left of the touchscreen that controls gear shifting. To select a gear, you press the brake and slide your finger up for Drive or down for Reverse; a simple tap will set the vehicle to Park. Although there are supplementary touch-buttons near the rearview mirror, I did not find myself needing to use them, as the touchscreen method became intuitive after a few parking attempts. This model offers an optional predictive shifting function that analyzes data from the cameras and sensors, as well as current driving patterns, to anticipate if the driver intends to switch to Drive or Reverse. However, my time with the Model 3 was too brief to evaluate this particular feature.

Certain aspects of the user interface have seen significant improvements. For instance, the technology used for keyless entry in the Tesla Model 3 has been revamped, and it consistently recognized my phone as the key without any hiccups. With other cars, there's often a lingering doubt about whether they've locked when I leave, but with the Model 3, I could visibly confirm it shutting off as I walked away. Moreover, when I returned with my phone in my pocket, the car would automatically unlock the specific part I was trying to access, be it the rear door on the passenger side or the trunk, all without needing extra presses or unlocking actions.

Upcoming 2024 version of

Passengers seated at the rear now have access to a personal touchscreen, and it certainly meets expectations. It operates with similar speed and almost matches the front screen in terms of functionality, including adjustable touchscreen vents for climate settings, audio adjustments, gaming and entertainment choices, among others. The outer seats come with built-in heating, which passengers can adjust to their comfort.

The rear seating area is quite spacious, comfortably accommodating two passengers, although the amount of headroom available could be a constraint. The vehicle's design includes ingeniously planned storage compartments, with sizeable pockets in the doors, several expansive concealed compartments within the central console, and a cushioned upper surface of the console that caters to the comfort of the driver's and passengers' arms. The car boasts ample cargo space both in the trunk and the front trunk, or 'frunk,' offering 21.0 cubic feet and 3.1 cubic feet respectively. This car features one of the rare front trunks that is sufficiently deep to be practical. It's perfect for placing a bag of groceries, including fragile items like eggs, or for tucking away a few small backpacks. The design ensures that items are held firmly in place, preventing them from rolling around during transit.

The Tesla Model 3 for the

Tesla has revamped its audio setup, yet the nine-speaker system in the Highland model fell short of expectations. It was adequate for podcasts and the majority of streamed tunes, but it missed the deep, resonant mid-low tones that I had appreciated in past drives with the Long Range Model 3 and Model Y. However, other variants of the Model 3 continue to boast a more superior sound system.

Every Model 3 is equipped with a standard set of Autopilot imaging and detection hardware, however, the particular Model 3 I reviewed did not have the Full Self-Driving feature enabled (which is available for a one-time fee of $8,000 or on a subscription basis). As a result, I experienced the default capabilities of the vehicle, which are decent but not top-notch. It is capable of maintaining a distinct lane and navigating turns with ease, yet it struggled to remain on course on sections of US 101 in Los Angeles where the lane markings were faded and the road surface was inconsistent.

Tesla's Model 3 Highland delivers outstanding performance in energy efficiency and charging capabilities, exceeding all anticipated standards during my actual driving experience.

The vehicle's onboard journey calculation system indicated that, over a distance of 158 miles where fuel efficiency wasn't the primary concern, I managed to achieve an average exceeding 4.1 miles per kilowatt-hour. The route encompassed a variety of driving conditions including city streets, coastal drives, challenging mountainous terrains, and a combination of congested and open highways, particularly experiencing the notorious traffic on Interstate 405. Throughout most of the journey, the air conditioning was set to a comfortable 74 degrees Fahrenheit, although I had to adjust it lower temporarily due to the discomfort caused by the intense noon sunlight penetrating through the side of the panoramic roof, which could be seen as a design flaw.

Tesla continues to set the standard in navigation efficiency. When I used the Model 3's system, it swiftly directed me to a nearby Supercharger location, offering a selection to choose from and displaying the number of accessible charging points and the count of Teslas en route to the same destination. The Supercharger facility in Santa Monica was in excellent condition, equipped with restroom facilities and shaded by a solar panel canopy.

2024 version of the Tesla Model 3 spotted at the Supercharger station in Santa Monica

Tesla's specifications mention that the LFP variant can handle a peak charging rate of 170 kilowatts, and during my experience, it momentarily reached 168 kilowatts when I initiated a charge at 15% battery life. It only required 23 minutes to reach an 80% charge level (which was the maximum allowed at the crowded Santa Monica charging location I used). Once at 80%, the car displayed a potential distance of 189 miles—this suggests that on a complete charge, the actual driving range could approach 240 miles, even with the fancier rims.

When it comes to Tesla, what stands out are its proficiency in energy usage and its charging capabilities, but I've chosen to focus on other aspects first. Despite some frustrating choices in the user interface and unnecessary commotion from the company's leadership, Tesla has succeeded in creating an electric vehicle that's not only serene and refined on the road but also one that I would personally prefer to drive rather than be a passenger in. It's a vehicle that justifies its value with attributes that extend past its energy-saving features, its fast-charging network, and its self-driving technology.

Upcoming 2024 version of

What's the point of Tesla designing vehicles that offer such an enjoyable driving experience when the company's goal seems to be for us to hand over control and let the vehicles operate as autonomous taxis? This doesn't seem to align with the previously erased Master Plan, does it?
