Volvo Unveils Glimpse of Future Electrification with ES90 Sedan Teaser
Volvo provided a sneak peek of the new ES90 electric sedan on Wednesday in Sweden, during the unveiling of the updated 2025.5 XC90 model.
The preview showcased a medium-sized four-door car with a windshield angle that distinctly sets it apart from the fuel-driven S90 model. Although it retains the sedan design, the back window may have a hatchback-style opening akin to the Polestar 2, reminiscent of the rear liftgate found on the Audi A6 E-Tron Sportback.
In the last month of the year, Volvo declared that the initial "test prototype" of a forthcoming model, known internally as V551, has been constructed. It is speculated that this V551 model will be the electric version of the combustion engine S90, and it's expected to be called the ES90 once it hits the market. This prototype was assembled at Volvo's manufacturing facility in Luqiao, China.
The ES90 is set to be the electric sedan or hatchback version equivalent to the EX90 electric SUV. Initially anticipated to roll out of production by May, a Volvo official in Australia has indicated that the company aims to introduce an electric sedan in the midsize category before 2024 concludes.

Preview of Volvo's Upcoming ES90 Electric Four-door Model – September 2024
It is anticipated that the ES90 will be constructed using Volvo's SPA2 framework, identical to the foundation used for the EX90 electric vehicle. This suggests that the ES90 could house a battery with a capacity of roughly 111 kWh and offer options between a single-motor rear-wheel drive and a dual-motor all-wheel drive. The power generation of the vehicle might surpass 500 horsepower.
The SPA2 platform is equipped with the capability for two-way charging and can handle power inputs as high as 250 kilowatts on a DC rapid charger. The EX90 is powered by a 111-kilowatt-hour battery, with an effective energy reserve of 107 kilowatt-hours, potentially offering a practical driving distance close to 300 miles. It's possible that the ES90 could boast improved aerodynamic features, allowing its more streamlined design to achieve greater mileage from a single charge.
According to a 2023 publication by Teknikens Värld, the upcoming ES90 is expected to measure 196.8 inches in length, supported by a 122-inch wheelbase. This size indicates that the ES90 will surpass the S90 by 6.3 inches and exceed the S90L, which was introduced to the American market in 2018, by 1.6 inches.
