Volkswagen Recalls Nearly 100,000 ID.4 EVs Over Faulty Door Handles That May Cause Unexpected Openings
Volkswagen is issuing a recall for 98,806 ID.4 electric models due to faulty door handles that may lead to the doors opening without warning.
The recall affects vehicles from the 2021 to 2024 model years that were manufactured in Zwickau, Germany, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. The issue with these vehicles is that their door handles may not properly seal against water intrusion. Volkswagen estimates that the defect is present in fewer than 1% of these vehicles.

Vehicles affected by the flaw may experience water seepage into the door handle, potentially reaching and damaging the printed circuit board. This damage could disrupt the signal between the handle and the door's control mechanism, mistakenly triggering the door to unlock, as outlined in the recall notices from the NHTSA. Drivers might detect this issue by hearing a clicking sound, akin to the usual noise of the door unlocking.
Volkswagen has acknowledged receipt of 135 warranty claims within the period from June 2023 to May 2024 concerning the mentioned problem, however, they have no knowledge of any incidents or harm caused as a
Service centers are set to examine the car door handles and, should it be required, will install upgraded replacements at no cost. Additionally, the vehicles will receive a software upgrade, and VW has committed to refunding any expenses that customers may have incurred due to this problem. This latest recall serves as an extension of two prior recalls. Those customers who had their vehicles serviced under the earlier recalls must also present their vehicles for the new recall procedures at the dealerships.
Upcoming 2024 Model of the Volkswagen
Volkswagen intends to send out letters to vehicle owners by the 1st of November, 2024. For further details, owners are encouraged to reach out to Volkswagen's customer support at the toll-free number 1-800-893-5298.
The recent recall comes after a previous one that affected approximately 80,000 ID.4 electric vehicles spanning the 2021 to 2023 model years, due to glitches with the screen and software malfunctions. The 2024 ID.4 models were not part of that recall, as they have been upgraded with several improvements, such as an optional bigger screen that appears to have resolved many of the interface problems that Green Car Reports identified in the prior models.
