GM and EVgo to Roll Out Gas-Station-Style EV Charging Hubs Across Major U.S. Cities by 2025
General Motors and EVgo are set to introduce 400 electric vehicle quick-charging stations, designed to resemble traditional gas stations, across key metropolitan regions in the U.S., with installations starting in 2025.
GM and EVgo revealed on Thursday that the planned charging stations will be equipped with 350-kw DC rapid chargers arranged in a drive-through setup, similar to traditional fuel stations, complete with extensive lighting and security cameras for safety.
The majority of charging stations will be dual-branded for EVgo and GM Energy, typically featuring around 20 charging points, although certain locations may have additional chargers. The focus for these stations will be in states such as Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Texas, as GM and EVgo scout for suitable spots.
The upcoming locations will employ a modular building method created by EVgo to speed up the building process and allow for potential growth later on, as stated by the firms, with the inaugural location set to launch the following year.
In 2022, General Motors and EVgo initiated a partnership to establish a nationwide network for electric vehicle charging, situating EVgo's chargers at Pilot and Flying J travel stops. The inauguration of these sites took place towards the end of 2023. These spots, many of which featured coverings and drive-through bays, are similar to the "flagship" city locations that GM and EVgo are aiming to construct, albeit with a greater emphasis on sites situated along major highways.
The joint venture aims to set up 2,850 charging points, with the majority expected to be operational before the year's conclusion. By August 2023, the initiative had crossed the 1,000-charging point milestone and anticipates hitting the 2,000 mark as the year closes. Both GM and EVgo have indicated that they will divert some funds to the upcoming city charging locations to guarantee they deliver the promised high-quality service.
