Verstappen Identifies Sole Positive Amidst Red Bull’s Monaco Struggles: A Weekend to Reflect and Improve
Max Verstappen refers to a solitary highlight from the Monaco Grand Prix amidst an otherwise forgettable weekend for Red Bull.
Max Verstappen found just a single silver lining for Red Bull after a memorable-for-the-wrong-reasons weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Verstappen experienced his poorest race result since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, ending in sixth place.
Red Bull found it challenging to adapt to the Monaco track, facing difficulties with the car's performance across the diverse bumps and curbs.
Verstappen's opportunity to climb the rankings was essentially dashed following a red flag incident and Red Bull's strategy to begin the race on hard tires.
This allowed the drivers who began the race on medium tires to change to hard tires during the red flag period, enabling them to fulfill their required pit stop.
During the race, Red Bull opted to change Verstappen's tires, yet this strategy failed to outpace George Russell for the fifth position.
Verstappen commented on the race, stating, "We ended up in the same position we began. The red flag disrupted our strategy, forcing us to switch back to the medium tires."
"We were aware that completing 77 laps on the medium tire would be incredibly challenging. Right from the first lap after the restart, we were driving at a pace four seconds slower."
"Relax. It requires absolutely no physical effort. It's just extremely dull."
Verstappen is optimistic that the silver lining from this weekend's events is Red Bull's clear identification of their primary shortfall and their strategy for enhancing it in the later part of the season.
"He mentioned that the upcoming weekend in Canada might present some challenges due to the track's kerbing, indicating their car doesn't perform well under such conditions. Additionally, with the track being resurfaced, there could be unforeseen factors, including unpredictable grip levels, making this an especially difficult weekend for the team."
Checo's vehicle also sustained significant damage on our end. In essence, it's a weekend we'd rather leave behind, yet there are valuable lessons to be drawn from it. The sole silver lining appears to be our newfound awareness of our major shortcomings, which is precisely what we need to focus on improving. Addressing these issues or even moderately improving them could significantly enhance our lap times.
"That's encouraging, yet it's something we must undertake."
