Duell der deutschen Luxus-SUVs: Audi Q5 gegen BMW X3 im umfassenden Vergleich 2024
Comparing the 2024 Audi Q5 and BMW X3: An Examination of the Latest Luxury SUVs
Are there noticeable differences or surprising similarities?
Is it just a coincidence that Audi and BMW are releasing their latest mid-size SUVs around the same time? Furthermore, the third iteration of the Q5 and the fourth edition of the X3 (also known as G45) share quite similar dimensions. Following the recent global debut of the new Q5, let's delve into an initial side-by-side comparison of both models based on the specifications.
Visual/Appearance
Let's compare the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3 at first glance. While design is subjective and varies from person to person, here's our take: The Q5 appears more dynamic, though slightly busier, complemented by a large grille. The BMW's iconic kidney grille isn't exactly modest in size either, but the X3 offers smoother, more streamlined lines that exude a calmer aesthetic.

In this side-by-side comparison of the two vehicles, we observe the distinct features before diving into the specifics. Notably, the Audi boasts protruding door handles, in contrast to the BMW's flush-fitted handles. Additionally, the Q5 features a more sloped roofline.

Let's delve into the specifics of the dimensions, and we certainly won't overlook the crucial figures for towing capacity and nose weight (for bikes on the rear) that are important in this category. As evident, apart from the maximum cargo space, there are no significant disparities.
In China, the BMW X3 is available with an additional 11 centimeters in length, providing extra space for the rear passengers.
Interior
As we continue our virtual tour, let's head inside to concentrate on the cockpit area. Not surprisingly, both in the Audi and BMW, digital displays and large touchscreens are the main features. Let's look at a head-to-head comparison:

Press photos typically showcase new cars in their full glory, with all the bells and whistles, meaning that the appearance of our two competing vehicles could vary based on the selected add-ons, upholstery, and trim options. The Audi stands out with a control panel positioned in front of the window controls, while the BMW features a touch panel with air vents integrated into the door. Both vehicles boast impeccable craftsmanship, but the Q5 slightly edges out in terms of the perceived quality of materials. A notable feature in the X3 is its convenient rotary push-button control.
This leads us to the screens installed in the vehicle. We're already familiar with the principles of redesign in the Audi that include the OLED curved display (11.9 inches for the instrument cluster, 14.5 inches for the infotainment system) and the optional 10.9-inch display for the front passenger from the A5. For the latest Q5, the dashboard design has been slightly adjusted to fit the SUV style, yet it largely remains consistent with their new design approach.
The X3's dashboard, which exudes a minimalist vibe, is dominated by the BMW Curved Display featuring a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen positioned side by side and angled towards the driver. The presence of physical buttons has been significantly diminished. Additionally, there's an optional head-up display available for both models.
Engines
Both options provide a comprehensive range of powertrains: 48-volt mild-hybrids close to full hybrids, diesel, and plug-in hybrids. For those who prefer a purely electric drive, the new Audi Q6 e-tron is available, or one can hold out for the upcoming BMW iX3.

Audi's latest fuel-efficient combustion engines featuring the so-called MHEV Plus technology are nearly equivalent to full hybrids. The lineup includes the new 2.0 TFSI with 204 horsepower, the familiar 2.0 TDI also with 204 horsepower, and the new 3.0 V6 TFSI with 367 horsepower found in the SQ5. These models are equipped with a 48-volt lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 1.7 kWh, a belt-driven starter-generator, and a new powertrain-integrated electric motor situated directly on the transmission's output shaft. This electric motor can provide an additional boost of up to 18 kW and can recover energy at a rate of up to 25 kW.
Maneuvering and parking can be done using purely electric power. The system remains active up to speeds of around 130 km/h. The aim is to utilize the electric drive during slow city commutes, in steady-flowing traffic such as on country roads, as well as when approaching the next town.
All engines are connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with the four-cylinder gasoline variant also available with front-wheel drive. In 2025, two plug-in hybrids will be introduced, both based on the 2.0-liter gasoline engine. These will offer 299 and 367 horsepower, and as of now, they are expected to provide an electric range of over 80 kilometers, surpassing the previous Q5's 60 kilometers.

The propulsion system of the BMW X3 30e xDrive merges a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor that's built into the 8-Speed Steptronic transmission. Together, they produce a combined power output of up to 220 kW (299 hp). On a full charge, the electric range is between 81 to 90 kilometers according to WLTP standards.
The flagship model of the series, the new X3 M50 xDrive, is powered by the most powerful inline six-cylinder petrol engine ever used in an M Performance vehicle. The 3.0-liter engine is paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Its maximum output of 293 kW (398 hp) is delivered to the road via an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and all-wheel drive. The BMW X3 M50 xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

The latest models of the new BMW X3 are enhanced with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology for improved efficiency. The new BMW X3 20 xDrive's 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine achieves a maximum output of 153 kW (208 hp). This allows the vehicle to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds. Similar to the new 1 Series, the X3's petrol versions no longer include the letter 'i' in their designation.
The peak output of the new X3 20d xDrive's four-cylinder diesel engine, which also has a 2.0-liter capacity, is 145 kW (197 hp). This diesel version can accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 7.7 seconds. By the summer of 2025, the new BMW X3 will enhance its range of engines with the addition of an inline six-cylinder diesel engine.
Here's an overview of all the engines initially available for the Q5 and X3:
