Perez Shaken and Surprised: Calls for Penalty After Dramatic Monaco Crash with Magnussen
Sergio Perez was left feeling unsteady following a collision and was taken aback that Kevin Magnussen faced no repercussions for their intense start-line incident in Monaco.
Sergio Perez mentioned he felt somewhat shaky following his high-impact collision during the opening lap of the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.
During Sunday's race, a collision initiated by Kevin Magnussen with the Red Bull racer led to a chaotic crash right at the ascent towards Massenet on the first lap. The incident, which also involved Nico Hulkenberg, caused a significant delay as the race was halted with a red flag.
After the severe collision, Perez underwent a medical examination at the health facility and assured everyone that he was unharmed.
"Perez admitted, "My performance was somewhat unsteady. The collision was rather forceful."
"If at any moment you observe my onboard footage, you'll notice that Kevin's vehicle is nowhere near mine, not beside me, and you can observe how the wall is steadily approaching. To maintain full speed, there was only one option available to escape it."
"In that situation, there was a point where either my car or the barrier would be hit because there wasn't enough space for both vehicles. At some point, he needed to acknowledge that I was already in that spot and, often, when you're the trailing car, you must recognize the moment to ease off before the situation escalates."
Upon learning about Magnussen's opinion that Perez should have given him more space, the Mexican responded by stating: “I believe he definitely shouldn't have been in that position to begin with, as there was only one possible outcome, which involved either colliding with the wall or with my vehicle.
"How is it expected of me to give him space when he isn't even next to me, you see. There comes a moment when you realize the barrier is approaching you and the only option is to pull back. I've encountered this situation multiple times, and there comes a moment when stepping back is the only choice."
Perez expressed his astonishment that the incident went without investigation and believed Magnussen should have been penalized.
"He expressed his astonishment at the extent and severity of the damage, noting his bewilderment. He emphasized the importance of inquiring into why there has been no investigation, as understanding the rationale behind the lack of penalty requires delving into the matter."
"I'm truly taken aback. My belief is that initially, it was about letting them compete, but this situation seemed more like reckless driving. The decision to maintain full speed, fully aware that a collision was imminent, strikes me as quite perilous behavior."
Red Bull's team leader, Christian Horner, expressed his astonishment that the incident wasn't looked into, noting it was quite a significant event.
Considering he had positioned his wheel on the inside on a segment of the track that consistently becomes tighter, one might have anticipated him to withdraw. Instead, he not only ruined Checo's race and the vehicle, but he also compromised his teammate's chances, which was not a wise move.
