Beam Global Unveils Innovative Solar and Wind-Powered Curbside EV Charging Using Streetlights
A firm from California is looking to innovate by incorporating EV charging stations at the curbside, along with solar and wind energy capabilities, into existing streetlights.
Beam Global has designed the BeamSpot, which utilizes both solar panels and compact wind turbines to produce a portion of its energy independently. This system includes integrated battery storage to optimize energy consumption. Unlike typical streetlights that offer just enough energy for lighting, the enhancements of renewable energy in the BeamSpot enable it to supply sufficient power for effective electric vehicle charging, according to Beam Global.
The BeamSpot streetlight charger, with a height of 40 feet, or 30 feet if you opt not to include wind energy generation, has the ability to produce 1 kilowatt from both solar and wind energy, should you choose to utilize both sources. It boasts a battery storage capacity of 15 kilowatt-hours. Beam Global asserts that the charging power can reach a maximum of 5.76 kilowatts. In total, the firm calculates that after a full day's charge, the BeamSpot could provide an additional 220 miles
Beam Global asserts that their BeamSpot technology can be easily integrated into current streetlight foundations, bypassing the intricate construction and approval procedures required for traditional EV charging stations. This approach may expedite the proliferation of EV charging facilities in city environments without encroaching on valuable pedestrian pathways, offering residents of multi-unit buildings a convenient charging option.

Several local governments across the United States are considering integrating electric vehicle chargers with streetlights. Recently, AmpUp and EVSE revealed that they have secured a deal with the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting to install 150 charging stations onto streetlight poles within the city. This initiative aligns with the mayor's ambitious goal to install 10,000 streetlight EV chargers within Los Angeles.
In 2022, Seattle revealed intentions to set up EV chargers along the curb, but solely based on requests. Both Kansas City and New York initiated pilot programs for this idea in 2021, with New York experiencing significant usage levels.
