2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV: Striking Design and Efficiency with Room for Improvement
Road Test: The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV Combines Efficiency with Elegance
The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV Deserves a Spot on Your Shopping List
We appreciate the design, efficiency, and craftsmanship of the Blazer EV.
The comfort of the rear seats in the Blazer EV differs from person to person, and the iOS application requires an overhaul.
In contrast to other electric vehicles designed like soap bars to maximize range, the Chevy Blazer EV takes a uniquely American approach.
The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV features a striking new design that houses a roomy and well-crafted interior. After spending a week with the vehicle and driving it on a road trip, we were impressed by its unexpected efficiency. However, it does have some drawbacks, including rear seats that may not be comfortable for all passengers, an unreliable range indicator, and a lackluster iOS app.
After a comprehensive test drive, these are the advantages and disadvantages of the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV.

Advantage: Chevy Blazer EV Boasts Camaro-Like Aesthetics
It seems the designers were heavily inspired by the Camaro when creating the Chevy Blazer EV, embracing its design elements wholeheartedly. Fortunately, they avoided the narrow windows reminiscent of a gun-slit. The front of the vehicle stands out with LED daytime running lights that accentuate its broad stance. The taillights are designed in the same vein as those on the latest Traverse and Equinox models, featuring light displays that can be activated during charging. These taillights also serve as charge indicators, with the bars progressively lighting up as the battery charges. The curved fenders at both the front and rear further echo the Camaro's influence. In summary, the Blazer EV features a sleek and unique design.

Once inside, there's a lot happening. My father entered and enthusiastically remarked, "This is amazing! It's somewhat reminiscent of the Batmobile. There ought to be flames shooting out of the vents." The RS model I was testing featured a red interior, which was quite visually striking. There are glossy chrome accents, vents with intricate designs, a tangible volume knob, and climate control buttons. It has a familiar feel that aligns with Chevy's internal combustion engine models.

Con: Rear seat comfort in the Chevy Blazer EV is subjective
With the front seat adjusted for my 5-foot-10 frame, I found the rear seat quite accommodating, providing ample space for my legs, knees, feet, and head. The outboard seats felt cozy to me. However, both my mother and wife independently remarked that the rear seat was uncomfortable. The child seat LATCH anchors are built into the lower part of the rear seatback rather than being recessed between the cushions like in most cars. This design choice splits the lower seatback, causing discomfort for some users. Additionally, my wife noted that the rear seat seatbelt mounting point was irritatingly positioned against her neck. The center rear seat is both narrow and sunken, making it uncomfortable for any passenger.

Headline: Chevrolet Blazer EV Shines with Impressive Efficiency
For larger electric vehicles, achieving a benchmark of 3.0 miles per kilowatt-hour (mi/kwh) is considered excellent. During mixed suburban driving, the Blazer EV easily maintained an average of 3.0 mi/kwh, even without focusing on efficiency and driving normally. On two separate highway trips exceeding 200 miles each, the Blazer EV recorded averages of 2.7 and 2.5 mi/kwh. These trips were conducted with cruise control set above 70 mph, ambient temperatures ranging from the mid to upper 70s, and the climate control set at 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Adverse weather conditions such as strong wind and rain impacted the efficiency on the latter trip.

Con: The Blazer EV struggles with range accuracy
Keep an eye on the battery’s charge level, similar to how you monitor a fuel gauge, and don't rely heavily on the Blazer EV's range estimate. Unlike earlier GM electric vehicles like the Chevy Bolt EV, which were accurate, the Blazer EV's range prediction seemed erratic and often overestimated the distance it could travel (potentially influenced by recent driving patterns). Notably, even though the range display suggested I could reach my destination, Google Maps' built-in navigation detected the issue and informed me when I needed to charge.

Pros: Chevy Blazer EV exudes robust construction
The overall build quality was impressive, with all components securely fastened. The panel alignment was precise, the doors shut with a reassuring sound, and every interaction—whether clicking, twisting, or handling parts—felt stable and premium, with no looseness or cheapness detected.

Cons: Chevy's iOS App Lags Behind
The rise of software-defined vehicles allows users to control their cars via smartphone apps. However, Chevrolet's iOS app, which shares its core with the Cadillac and GMC apps but features a different design, seems to be a generation behind competitors like Rivian, Lucid, and Tesla. When you open the app, it displays the last update time, which typically shows as 30 to 50 minutes ago—hardly a real-time status of the vehicle. Whether it's checking if the car is charging or locked, users must pull down to refresh the app, a process that takes minutes instead of seconds. Furthermore, executing commands such as starting the car or unlocking it is sluggish, taking several seconds and feeling noticeably slow.
Putting the Chevy iOS app to one side, the Blazer EV offers a glimpse into Chevrolet's upcoming direction. It represents a future that feels both recognizable and conventional, with the key difference being its battery-powered engine instead of a traditional gasoline one. Its attractive features make it a strong contender for those considering the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y.
