Aleix Espargaro’s Valiant Battle in Catalunya: A Lion’s Heart Against Marc Marquez’s Precision
Aleix Espargaro stated, "I battled fiercely, yet Marc remains unparalleled. Aleix elaborated, "Marc guarded the inside line, and I ultimately chose against taking the risk at the last second. It could have caused a huge disaster! On such an important weekend for me, I preferred to avoid any trouble."
Aleix Espargaro narrowly missed achieving a dream farewell at his home MotoGP race in Catalunya, finishing just 0.052 seconds away from a podium spot on Sunday.
Following his declaration of retiring after the current season, the Aprilia ace quickly led the practice session, secured the pole position, and triumphed in the Saturday Sprint.
However, the full-scale Grand Prix on Sunday, which used the medium instead of the soft rear tire, presented a significantly harder test.
Falling from first to sixth position shortly after the start, Espargaro managed to regain positions and moved up to third when Pedro Acosta had an accident and exited the race on the 11th lap of the 24-l
Marc Marquez overtook Espargaro for the third position with just four laps left, yet Espargaro didn't give up easily and was nearly in a position to attempt a daring move in the last few turns.
"Using the soft tyre, my performance was significantly better. However, today, when I switched to the medium, it just didn't feel right," Espargaro explained. "Towards the end, I did everything I could to keep up with Marc, yet I kept losing grip, just sliding around."
"I attempted every strategy because Marc struggled to handle the right turns effectively. Therefore, I thought, 'Alright, if you manage to get nearer in turns 13 or 14, perhaps you can aim for the inside.
"He safeguarded the interior, and ultimately, I chose not to proceed at the final second."
"I had the potential to create a significant problem! Especially with Marc, in Catalunya, during a weekend that was unique to me, I wanted to avoid that. Securing the fourth position is satisfactory."
However, Espargaro maintained he had no remorse, stating, "I battled fiercely throughout the entire race."
"I aimed for a top-three finish in my final home race, so I took a gamble. I gave it my all. Yet, Marc is Marc – flawless. He clinched his spot on the podium.
"The podium was dominated by Ducati, securing the top three spots, while Aprilia finished in fourth position. Despite my efforts, it just wasn't sufficient."
Espargaro crossed the finish line with a 5.4-second lead over Raul Fernandez, who was riding the next fastest Aprilia, a 2023 model, and placed fifth.
Maverick Vinales, his team member from the factory, finished a significant 12 seconds after Espargaro, securing the 12th position.
However, Espargaro acknowledged that he was unable to match the speed of the Ducati pair, Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, who crossed the finish line a full ten seconds before him.
"Espargaro remarked, 'It's insane, they managed to outdo my last year's race time by 20 seconds.'"
"Ducati selected this circuit for their trial runs and made significant advancements."
A discovery was made within the tyre preservation efforts. A significant finding was indeed made regarding the medium tyre. This underscores the critical importance of testing.
"Last year, Aprilias secured the top two positions here. This year, they [Ducati] selected Barcelona for their test track. We didn't… Ducatis took the top two spots."
Espargaro plans to transition to a role focusing on test rides and select wild-card appearances in 2025, but unexpectedly disclosed that this likely won't be with Aprilia…
