Electrifying the Future: Porsche to Sell Electric Cayenne Alongside Traditional Gas Models into the Next Decade
Porsche has announced that it will continue to offer its existing range of Cayenne vehicles, which features plug-in hybrids, even after the introduction of a new, all-electric Cayenne model. This fourth-generation electric variant will be available for purchase throughout the remainder of the 2020s and into the following decade.
The existing lineup of Cayenne vehicles, available since the 2019 model year and recently refreshed for 2024, will undergo additional enhancements. These updates aim to maintain their appeal when the anticipated electric variant hits the market, projected to commence sales in 2026, and potentially be introduced as a 2027 model in the United States.
It indicates that the well-liked midsize high-performance SUV will continue to be available with a selection of three different engine options for the foreseeable future.
On Thursday, Porsche released a statement indicating a delay in their expected shift to electric vehicles, which is taking longer than initially anticipated. Additionally, the car manufacturer is revising its initial goal of electric vehicles constituting 80% of its sales by 2030, while still maintaining readiness to achieve this target if market demand increases.
Prototype of an Electric Porsche Cayenne
For quite some time, test models of the electric version of the Cayenne have been seen undergoing trials outdoors. This vehicle incorporates an advanced version of the 800-volt PPE (Premium Performance Electric) architecture initially introduced with the 2024 Macan and subsequently utilized in the 2025 Audi Q6 E-Tron.
Porsche aims to not only maintain its usual high-performance standards but also focus on ensuring the electric Cayenne has a large battery capacity and reliable charging capabilities, along with being highly efficient, according to Michael Steiner, the head of Research and Development at Porsche, in a recent announcement.
The test models are significantly disguised, yet it seems they bear a resemblance to the electric variant of the Macan. In the meantime, Porsche will continue to offer the traditional gasoline-powered Macan concurrently with its new electric counterpart. However, the company has made it clear that it will cease manufacturing the gasoline version come 2026.
The manufacturing of the electric version of the Cayenne model is anticipated to occur at the Volkswagen Group's facility located in Bratislava, Slovakia. This is the same site where the existing gasoline and hybrid versions of the Cayenne are assembled.
