Road trial: The upcoming 2024 Solterra from Subaru seems at home on scenic routes

Subaru's lineup has always had a bit of a unique streak compared to the average car. After getting acquainted with the Solterra, their inaugural electric vehicle, it became clear that this trend would continue into their electric offerings. Sporting all-wheel drive, this electric crossover stands apart from its peers, charting its own course in the EV market.

I had the chance to take the Solterra for a short off-road test drive before embarking on a longer journey of over 400 miles, most of which, about 360 miles, was on highways. During this extensive drive, I assessed the vehicle's pros and cons and came to understand that the Solterra was out of its preferred environment. The Solterra is better suited for less frequented roads, dirt tracks, uneven paths, and the journeys to remote hiking or boating spots—the less conventional roads. These settings are more fitting for the Solterra than trying to cover a lot of ground on the interstate in record time.

In conducting an evaluation, the 2024 Solterra's enhanced charging capabilities were put to the test during a drive on the Interstate Highway System. Subaru has its sights set on increasing the Solterra's market presence by introducing a range of upgrades and enhancements in its second year. These improvements include faster charging times, the introduction of steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters that allow drivers to modify regenerative braking in real-time, and the addition of roof bars capable of supporting a static weight of up to 700 pounds, which is ideal for those who use rooftop tents.

The focus has been heavily on the charging capabilities and the effectiveness of the Solterra, so let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages that define it.

Advantage: Reliable electric AWD system

Subaru's Solterra is born from a collaboration with Toyota, sharing much in common with the Toyota bZ4X. However, the Solterra exclusively offers all-wheel drive, and Subaru takes pride in its role in fine-tuning the traction and stability control systems for these vehicles. This includes the integration of Subaru's X-Mode system for enhanced off-road capability in the Solterra.

During my experience behind the wheel of the Solterra at this year's NWAPA Mudfest, an event where various vehicles are put to the test, I tackled a rigorous track featuring a sharp, somewhat unstable slope, and obstacles such as logs, rocks, and holes that tested the vehicle's suspension. The Solterra handled it all without hesitation.

The Solterra offers three driving modes – Eco, Normal, and Sport – with the primary variation being the responsiveness of the throttle. However, for this particular test, I chose to engage X-Mode, a feature Subaru has adapted from its traditional fuel-powered lineup. Unlike the Forester or Outback, the Solterra's approach to gaining traction is distinct. I observed that X-Mode was adjusted to emphasize precision, a testament to the fine-tuning possible with electric vehicle technology. This mode also incorporates a Grip Control function that regulates a consistent, slow off-road pace with minimal tire slippage. While it doesn't come with an advanced high-speed driving aid like Autopilot or Super Cruise, it does offer a version of cruise control that's well-suited for Subaru enthusiasts who enjoy off-road ventures.

Similar to many Subaru models, the Solterra boasts substantial ground clearance. With 8.3 inches, it stands an inch or two taller than other electric crossovers of a similar size, which could be the deciding factor in successfully navigating a snow-filled driveway without getting stuck. Additionally, if the situation allows, you have the option to disable all the traction controls, giving you the freedom to engage in a more dynamic driving experience that predominantly powers the rear wheels.

Downside: The Solterra struggles with containing road noise

A common drawback of electric vehicles is their silent engines highlight other sounds, and this was evident with the Solterra, especially on highways. I was constantly increasing the volume on the impressive Harman Kardon sound system to drown out the noise inside the car. This noise was more pronounced than what I experienced in the Ford Mustang Mach-E during the same period. The Solterra's shape is fairly angular, but the noise didn't seem to come from wind resistance around the roof or sides. Instead, it appeared to be the hum of the road surface itself that was the issue. This is something I've observed in other vehicles, like some Subaru models and the Toyota RAV4, indicating it may be a characteristic common to the brand.

Advantage: Reliable efficiency, steady distance coverage

According to official figures, the Solterra is certified with an EPA range of 227 miles, utilizing a practical capacity of 65 kWh from its total capacity of 72.8 kWh. When looking at the EPA's combined driving cycle data, it achieves an estimated 3.1 miles per kWh. These efficiency metrics are quite commendable, aligning closely with the all-wheel-drive Hyundai Ioniq 5's 260 miles from a usable 74 kWh, and the all-wheel-drive Volkswagen ID.4 Pro's 263 miles from a usable 77 kWh. The key difference is that it has a considerably smaller battery capacity.

During my time driving the Solterra over a distance of over 400 miles, the average energy consumption was 3.4 miles per kilowatt-hour. This encompassed a 360-mile stretch on the highway from Portland, Oregon to Bellevue, Washington, where the consumption fluctuated between 3.2 and 3.4 miles per kilowatt-hour.

This positive review of the Solterra's energy performance comes with significant caveats. While testing the vehicle, the conditions were ideal – the climate was pleasantly warm, ranging between 55 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet, from a previous experience driving its close cousin, the Toyota bZ4X AWD, I observed that cooler weather around the 40-degree mark significantly hampers both efficiency and driving range. Additionally, the Solterra's energy efficiency takes a sharp nosedive when traveling over 70 mph. On a brief journey across flat terrain with little wind, the trip computer indicated a drop from 3.5 mi/kwh at 70 mph to just 2.6 mi/kwh at 77 mph. Keep this in mind, and you'll likely avoid speeding.

Negative: Lengthy charging pauses

Embarking on an extended journey with the Solterra is feasible, however, quick travel shouldn't be anticipated. During my 360-mile round journey from Portland to Bellevue, I had to halt for charging twice, and these weren't quick stops. While Subaru advertises that the Solterra can achieve a 10-80% charge in roughly 35 minutes, my experience with charging times did not align with this claim.

Owing to the positioning of the charging stations, I found it necessary to connect my charger when my battery hit 25%. My goal was to charge up to 80%, but after 41 minutes and receiving 35.8 kWh of power, I chose to stop at 77%. The charge rate didn't hit 60 kW at any point, and it shockingly indicated it would take a full 120 minutes to fully charge to 100%. Makes one wonder, what would Matt Pinfield do?

I continued my journey, covering an additional 152 miles with an energy efficiency of 3.4 miles per kilowatt-hour. Upon recharging with the battery at 9%, the charging power quickly escalated to 80 kilowatts. The battery's charge leaped from 9% to 48% in a brisk 20 minutes, before the charging speed significantly diminished. During this brief interval, I gained almost 80 miles of practical driving distance, which was more than sufficient to return to Portland and connect my Level 2 charger. This charging pace is more in line with what Subaru advertises. However, the Electrify America charging station still projected that reaching 80% battery from a 9% starting point would take 55 minutes in that particular charging session.

Charging process for the 2024 Subaru Sol

In summary, one hour of charging was sufficient for a journey covering 360 miles, with the return leg ending with almost an empty battery being acceptable. However, for extended trips with more variables, the charging time increases; anticipate needing roughly an hour of charging for every 180 miles traveled on highways—that's an hour of charging for every 2.5 hours of driving at a speed of 70 mph, assuming charging stations are ideally located. This is where the top-performing electric vehicles, such as the Ioniq 5 with its ability to charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, can really make a significant impact.

Advantage: The Solterra boasts ample rear space for passengers and excels in storing equipment.

Many of the latest electric SUVs are designed with sloping rooflines that compromise rear passenger comfort and cargo capacity. However, the Solterra stands out with its generous roominess in the rear seating area, providing a sense of openness not often found in its competitors. The vehicle features broad door openings and a rear seating area that comfortably accommodates adults—particularly in models without the Touring variant's panoramic sunroof. For those who frequently transport sports equipment or haul treasures from antique shopping, the Solterra proves to be quite accommodating, offering a substantial 23.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. This expands to an impressive 63.5 cubic feet when the second row's 60/40-split seats are folded down, albeit not completely flat.

Downside: Achieving a relaxed driving position is a challenge upfront.

Due to the inadequately short and stiff seat padding, the rigid central console, the overly intricate dashboard configuration, and the peculiarly shaped steering wheel, it becomes a tough task for taller individuals to find ease in the pilot's seat. Despite the introduction of a redesigned steering wheel, as a driver standing six feet and six inches tall, I faced an almost insurmountable task in finding a steering wheel adjustment that provided both a cozy driving stance and clear visibility of the instrument panel.

The technological features didn't enhance the driving experience. Specifically, the Solterra's system for monitoring the driver, which uses a camera mounted near the steering wheel's upper edge, proved ineffective. It appears to have deteriorated in its ability to determine if taller drivers, like myself, are paying attention. No matter how I changed my seating position, it seemed as though even if I had my eyes wide open with tape, the system would still pester me to stay focused. Fortunately, I stumbled upon an option within the settings that let me turn it off.

Solterra technology: Adequate, yet lacks a crucial element

Despite its intricate design, the Solterra’s system covers most bases after you get the hang of it. The heated and cooled front seat adjustments are managed by distinct touch buttons beneath the display; the intensified regenerative braking mode that enables one-pedal driving is activated by an actual button (and there are paddle shifters on the steering wheel too!); plus, the air vents are strategically positioned for swift and straightforward direction adjustment without the need to use the touchscreen.

The display setup didn't cause me any trouble, as it was quite similar to what I've experienced in the latest Toyota models, like the bZ4X. The integration of Wireless Apple CarPlay was seamless, and I was impressed by the vivid, 12.3-inch touchscreen that serves as the main hub for media and applications in every model except for the entry-level Premium.

Within the premium Touring model, you have access to cloud-based navigation that can locate charging points close to you. However, it lacks an essential feature – an efficient route planner that could suggest optimal stopping points for charging, minimizing the time spent charging during your journey. Fortunately, there are third-party applications available to fill this gap.

2024 Edition of Subaru Solterra

The starting cost for the 2024 Subaru Solterra is $46,340 for the Premium model, with the price rising to $54,558 for the Touring version, which includes additional charges for premium paint, floor mats, and a cargo tray. The vehicle is equipped with two permanent-magnet motors delivering 107 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque each, combining for a total of 215 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque, and features all-wheel drive. According to EPA estimates, it can cover 227 miles on a full electric charge and has a combined efficiency of 3.1 miles per kilowatt-hour. Positive aspects include the all-wheel-drive system's grip and precision, respectable efficiency, and ample space in the back seat and cargo area. On the downside, the vehicle suffers from slow charging times, noticeable road noise, limited space in the front seats, and the absence of a
