Meituan’s Delivery Workers Earn $11 Billion in 2023 as CEO Wang Xing Addresses Gig Worker Welfare Concerns Amidst Policy Pressure
The CEO of Meituan, a leading Chinese company that provides on-demand services, stated that their delivery employees made a total of $11 billion in 2023. Wang Xing's internal declaration is seen as a measure by Meituan to appease concerns of policymakers in mainland China, who are worried about the well-being of gig economy workers.
Wang's internal declaration, who, according to Forbes, had a net worth of US$10.4 billion as of September 18, mirrors Meituan's attempts to alleviate the concerns of policymakers in mainland over the wellbeing of gig-economy workers in the country. This includes freelancers, food delivery couriers, live-stream broadcasters, and ride-hailing drivers.
