In 2023, the Tesla Model Y topped global car sales, making history not just by securing the number one spot. Its rapid ascent to the top shortly after its launch was noteworthy, as was its distinction as the first fully electric vehicle to lead the worldwide sales chart.

Earlier in the year, we anticipated the success of the Tesla Model Y, and now the sales figures have validated our predictions. The Tesla Model Y made its debut in March 2019. Thus, its initial full year in the market was 2020, which coincided with the global market disruptions caused by the pandemic. Disregarding this atypical year, it took the Model Y merely three years to soar to the top of the sales charts.

It's an impressive feat, especially given that this vehicle isn't accessible globally. The Model Y stands out as one of those rare automobiles that resonates with consumers across various global markets.

According to our investigation, Tesla's SUV model has achieved sales of 1.22 million units last year. The sales figures have soared by an impressive 64 percent since 2022, which translates to an increase of nearly 480,000 units. This significant growth is one of the reasons this model has made history, as no other brand's vehicle has ever seen such an annual sales surge.

As previously stated, the Tesla Model Y holds the distinction of being the first fully electric vehicle to top the global rankings, a feat that until now had only been nearly matched by Toyota's hybrid models.

Within the international league table, Toyota managed to secure spots for five of its models within the top 10. This was largely due to the RAV4's high demand in China and North America, the consistent performance of the Corolla range (notwithstanding the sedan's slight drop due to increased interest in its sibling model, the Corolla Cross), the Camry's stronghold as the most favored mid-size sedan globally, and the impressive outcomes for the Toyota Hilux, which ranks as the top pick in emerging markets, ensuring a significant representation in the popularity charts.

Honda also performed well with the CR-V, which secured third place. The Civic Sedan, Accord, and HR-V also made it into the top 25, indicating Honda's strong presence in Asia and North America.

The Ford F-150's popularity in the United States and Canada propelled it to the seventh position in the global rankings, despite its unavailability in most regions of the world. Its rivals, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500, landed in the 16th and 18th spots respectively. Together, these vehicles accounted for 14 percent of vehicle sales in the US and Canada.

The world's second highest-selling electric vehicle once again comes from Tesla. The refreshed version of the Model 3 has secured the tenth spot, showing a five percent increase in sales compared to the previous year.

Chinese manufacturers made their mark on the global stage by securing spots within the top 25 best-selling cars of 2023. BYD led the charge with three of its models making the list: the Qin, an electric compact sedan that's a favorite in China, the Song Plus, a mid-sized SUV, and the Yuan Plus, known in some markets as the Atto 3, which saw a striking 119 percent increase in sales compared to the previous year.

Within the top 25, a mere two European models make the cut: the Volkswagen Polo and the Volkswagen Jetta. This could potentially signal that European manufacturers are still not catching up with worldwide movements. It remains to be seen whether this trend will continue, leading to a future dominated by Chinese models rather than European and American ones on the bestseller charts.
