Mercedes-Benz Teams Up with Starbucks to Supercharge Your Coffee Break: Over 100 Locations to Get EV Fast Chargers
Mercedes-Benz is expanding its electric vehicle rapid-charging network by incorporating charging stations at more than 100 Starbucks outlets, as revealed by both entities in a joint statement on Monday.
In the beginning stage, Mercedes will set up 400-kw DC rapid charging stations at Starbucks outlets located along the I-5 highway. This particular route was one of the first to be equipped with charging facilities over ten years ago under the initiative known as the West Coast Electric Highway. The highway runs from Canada through to Mexico and includes Seattle, the city where Starbucks was founded.
Mercedes-Benz has inaugurated an electric vehicle charging station in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
Mercedes and Starbucks have not disclosed the number of charging stations to be set up initially, nor have they specified the areas targeted for future expansion phases.
The initiative is a continuation of a trial by Volvo launched in 2022, which involves installing as many as 60 ChargePoint DC rapid charging stations across a maximum of 15 Starbucks locations. This will span a route of 1,350 miles from Seattle to Denver, ensuring there's a charging station approximately every 100 miles.
Electric Vehicle Charging Station by Mercedes-Benz Located in Sandy Springs, Georgia
In January 2023, Mercedes revealed plans for a quick-charging infrastructure and inaugurated the initial charging location in Sandy Springs, Georgia, close to Atlanta, by November. The car manufacturer intends to solely employ 400-kw charging equipment, and envisages charging centers that are equipped with facilities such as toilets, snack dispensers, and brightly illuminated charging bays. These future charging stations are set to accommodate both the Combined Charging Standard (CCS) and the Tesla-style North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug types.
The car manufacturer reports that since its launch in November 2023, it has established twelve more charging stations spread out through Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The company anticipates that within the next year to year and a half, the expansion will extend the network to cover "almost half" of the states in the U.S. Collaborations such as the one with Starbucks are providing Mercedes with the adaptability to construct these networks in locations that might not have the space for a standalone charging station.
