BMW Electrifies Recycling: Partners with Redwood Materials for Sustainable Battery Lifecycle
Redwood Materials is set to assist BMW in the recycling process of their electric vehicle batteries. BMW has declared that they will collaborate with Redwood Materials for managing battery waste from their electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and mild hybrids across the United States.
The deal encompasses the BMW, Rolls-Royce, and Mini car lines, alongside BMW's motorbike range, and involves Redwood collaborating with BMW's retail outlets, distribution hubs, and additional American locations to reclaim batteries once they're no longer viable. BMW asserts that a substantial 95% to 98% of essential elements such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper will be reclaimed through recycling processes.

BMW claims that Redwood's recycling methods have the potential to cut energy consumption by 80%, shrink carbon dioxide emissions by 70%, and diminish water usage by 80% in contrast to the extraction and processing of fresh minerals.
Established by ex-Tesla executive JB Straubel in 2017, Redwood has plans to construct a recycling plant in Charleston, South Carolina, situated at a convenient distance from BMW's production sites. This car manufacturer operates a production facility in Spartanburg and is in the process of constructing a battery factory in Woodruff. Meanwhile, AESC, a provider of battery cells for BMW, operates a facility in Florence.

BMW has set a target to manufacture a minimum of six completely electric vehicles within the United States by the year 2030. Before that, the company plans to increase the manufacturing of its upcoming "Neue Klasse" electric vehicles at facilities situated abroad. The initial offering, an SUV, is scheduled to begin assembly in Hungary by 2025, with a sedan to follow in 2026. Production of the SUV will also commence in Mexico in 2027.
Redwood has been granted a loan of $2 billion from the Department of Energy in the United States in the year 2023. This company runs a recycling center in the vicinity of Reno, Nevada. Its clientele includes prominent automobile manufacturers such as Ford, Toyota, and the Volkswagen Group's subsidiaries, Audi and VW.
