Ford’s $325,000 Question: Is the Mustang GTD Interior Worth the Price Tag?
Interior of the Mustang GTD: Are you serious, Ford?
The high-end Mustang seems to have an interior almost identical to the standard Mustang model. Yet, it's priced at $325,000.
The Ford Mustang GT3 is set to make its debut this weekend at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At the same event, the road version, the GTD, will be showcased in Europe for the first time. European orders will also kick off simultaneously. Ford has recently circulated new images of the GTD, which includes the initial glimpses of the vehicle's interior.
Are you prepared? Have you made a down payment on one of these cars? It's time to get started:
A completely ordinary Mustang interior in a car worth $325,000. Three hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars.
Yes, Ford's six-figure Pony Car will feature an interior that's nearly identical to the standard Mustang, but with just a few minor tweaks. And when I say minor, I mean it. The bulk of what GTD buyers are investing in is the specialized suspension, aerodynamics, and carbon fiber components from Multimatic. However, typically, purchasers at this price point anticipate a higher level of refinement across all aspects of the vehicle.
The additions to a typical Mustang interior are brief – no need to grab a coffee or anything, this won't take much time:
Here you have the opportunity to make a direct comparison:
And there's more on the horizon. The GTD is set to offer an additional performance package. Indeed, on top of the sticker price of $325,000, Ford is looking to collect a little extra cash to unlock the full potential of what's touted as the most powerful Mustang ever. While the car manufacturer has yet to announce the official cost for this package, given that it includes magnesium wheels, a DRS system, and an abundance of carbon fiber aerodynamics, it's likely to come with a hefty price tag.
I want to emphasize that the Mustang GTD is an impressive piece of machinery. It's not your typical Mustang under the hood, and its active aerodynamics are not only marvelously engineered but also aesthetically pleasing. Who wouldn't want to witness a supercharged Mustang equipped with a 5.2-liter V8 engine churning out over 800 horsepower and a transaxle tearing through a bunch of European cars like Godzilla rampaging through Tokyo?
It's quite surprising that Ford didn't go the extra mile with the interior design. If anything, they should have opted for a more minimalist approach. The Performance Package involves stripping away some of the sound insulation. Perhaps they could consider removing the iPads from the dashboard and doing away with the cup holders?
This is essentially a standardized race car – it's not the type of vehicle you'd drive to the local pub. I'd even argue that the interior would be passable if the GTD was priced at $150,000. However, not at $325,000.
Additional Insights on the Mustang:
Ultimately, it's up to the consumers to determine if this is acceptable (my checks to Ford have just bounced, so I'm not in the running), and I have no doubt that they will sell out every unit regardless. It's just unfortunate that such a unique vehicle will have such an unremarkable interior.
