Dodge Charger Daytona EV: Electrifying Muscle Car Performance with a Hefty Price Tag

Published

on

The 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Electric Vehicle is available starting at $61,590.

The upcoming 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona sets itself apart from the typical electric car models. With its two hatchback versions, this performance-focused brand is charging into the era of electric vehicles while retaining the robust, aggressive spirit of its heritage. When it comes to the usual electric vehicle highlights of driving range and fuel economy, Dodge's CEO Tim Kuniskis expressed a dismissive attitude, plainly stating, "I don’t care.”

"Kuniskis boasted at a press event held a week prior to the worldwide launch in March that the vehicle isn't meant to deliver a 500-mile range. Instead, its purpose is to serve as the pinnacle of high-performance vehicles, that is until the Banshee is released, naturally."

When it debuts in 2024, the series will begin with the 2024 Dodge Charger R/T, priced at $61,590, destination fee of $1,995 included. An upgraded version, the Charger Daytona Scat Pack, will be available for $75,185.

The Banshee model of the Daytona is set to be released at the end of 2025. Before that, the electric version of the Charger Daytona will hit the market in the latter part of 2024, with its five-door versions launching at the beginning of 2025. Concurrently, Dodge is set to unveil a powerful Hurricane twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 engine capable of delivering 550 horsepower, specifically for the Charger Sixpack editions. The latest Charger is taking over the position previously held by the two-door Challenger, although Kuniskis mentions that there are still projects in the works for the Challenger.

Kuniskis discussed the upcoming changes to the Charger lineup, revealing plans to phase out superchargers in favor of kilowatts and Power Shots, and hinted at the inclusion of utility vehicles in their future offerings. He reflected on the initial decision-making process for the platform, noting that despite the global recognition of the skateboard as the most efficient EV platform, they opted for a multi-energy approach to accommodate a variety of vehicles on the same platform, acknowledging the gamble that decision posed at the time.

Despite its emphasis on high performance, the 2024 Charger Daytona is expected to deliver a range of 317 miles for the base R/T version, and the Scat Pack variant manages 260 miles, thanks to a 100.5-kwh (with 93.5-kwh effectively utilized) battery pack made from nickel-cobalt-aluminum lithium-ion.

The Daytona models are built on the STLA Large platform from the manufacturer and feature two 250-kw motors that use permanent magnets and are synchronized, delivering power to each axle for built-in all-wheel drive functionality. During its debut year, both the R/T and Scat Pack trims will include a standard Direct Connection enhancement package from Dodge's own performance parts division. This package offers intermittent power surges of an additional 40 horsepower for 15 seconds, provided there is a 30-second interval between each surge. Dodge has named this feature the Power Shot, which can be activated through a dedicated button on the steering wheel located opposite the drive mode selector, offering convenience and avoiding the need to navigate through menus or touchscreens to increase power. From the following year onward, the Power Shot feature will be an additional cost option.

The initial power boost option for the R/T model increases its performance to 496 horsepower and 404 pound-feet of torque. Dodge predicts this upgrade allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, complete a quarter-mile in 13.1 seconds, and reach a maximum speed of 137 mph.

The upgraded Power Shot option boosts the Scat Pack's performance to 670 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Its performance metrics include a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 11.5 seconds, and a maximum speed of 134 mph.

Included only in the initial year's model is Dodge's most substantial brake system to date, featuring front calipers with six pistons and rear ones with four pistons, all gripping onto 16.0-inch discs. The design doesn't accommodate one-pedal driving, but it does incorporate paddle shifters that allow for three different intensities of regenerative braking.

The forward drive system can disengage power to the wheels, enhancing both the vehicle's range and efficiency depending on the selected driving mode. Meanwhile, the back drive system incorporates a mechanical limited-slip differential to enhance grip during cornering. Various drive modes are available as expected, and for Scat Packs, there are specialized modes for Drag, Drift, and Donuts that reduce or restrict power to the front axle and suppress the traction control system.

A specialized Fratzonic exhaust system incorporates speakers positioned beneath the vehicle, which intensifies sound through resonating devices akin to those found in a muffler or a pipe organ. This system is enhanced electronically, producing a roar comparable to Dodge's famed Hellcat. There's an option to turn off this feature, entering a quiet "stealth mode." Additionally, the system has the capability to mimic the rumble of a V-8 engine or remain silent when in stealth mode.

The Scat Pack Track Package enhances the vehicle's multi-link suspension system at both ends by incorporating adaptive dampers, along with the inclusion of a launch control feature. Unique to this package is the setup of uneven tire sizes fitted onto the 20-inch rims, featuring Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 305/35ZR20 on the front 11-inch wide wheels and wider 325s on the rear 11.5-inch wheels.

The typical wheels on the R/T model measure 18 inches. However, the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) estimated driving range applies to the larger 20-inch wheels. Dodge has not supplied a driving range estimate for the models equipped with 18-inch wheels.

The anticipated distance and efficiency figures are noteworthy given another detail: each Charger Daytona tips the scales at a hefty 5,838 pounds.

The 2024 Daytona model closely resembles the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept that was showcased in August 2022, with minor modifications made to satisfy regulatory requirements. Measuring 206.6 inches in length, it surpasses the previous Dodge Charger by six inches and boasts a breadth that Dodge claims is the most expansive for a passenger vehicle, barring those in the heavy-duty dual-wheel truck category.

The standout element of this design, which also serves an aerodynamic function, is the R-Wing, a prominent front edge that caps the nose of the vehicle. Dodge hasn't boasted about the drag coefficient, yet the nose's downward slope echoes the unique design of the 1968 Dodge Daytona Charger, famously equipped with a 23-inch-high wing at the back. According to Dodge's exterior designer Scott Krugger, in conversation with Green Car Reports, the R-Wing is designed to have a neutral impact on airflow.

"When the nose is angled downward, it improves aerodynamics by 11 counts, which translates to a reduction of 0.011 in the drag coefficient, compared to a design with a textured grille or intake leading into the engine area."

The Charger Daytona's distinctive wing adds to the vehicle's iconic robust appearance. The design features a continuous light strip at the front that bends upwards at the ends, emphasizing the wing and extending the front end's appearance width-wise. The design flows seamlessly, with line accents that transition from the sleek sides to a contour that ascends elegantly and assertively towards the rear hatch. The visual impact of the 5.6-inch ground clearance and increased ride height is diminished by a black lower body that extends upward past the rear wheels, blending into the hatch. Although it stands an inch higher at 59.0 inches compared to the previous Charger model, it maintains a broad and aggressive stance. The pronounced C-pillars on the five-door version further enhance the classic muscle car look.

The Charger Daytona stands out as a hatchback with its unique electric vehicle design, setting it apart from others currently on the market. While we didn't get the chance to evaluate the spaciousness of the cabin in this five-door variant, Dodge claims that the hatch offers a cargo capacity that's 133% greater than the previous Charger model. The space measures approximately 23 cubic feet; however, because the floor is not very deep, to accommodate something sizable like the set of four racing tires Dodge advertises, you would need to fold down the back seats that have a 60:40 split, expanding the area to 38.5 cubic feet.

Individuals over 6 feet might find the rear seats more accommodating, considering the installed glass roof reduces overhead space. However, with 37.2 inches of space for the legs, it's on par with the majority of small SUVs, ensuring a comfortable ride for four passengers, provided the taller ones sit in the front seats.

At the front, there's a small storage compartment of 1.5 cubic feet for keeping the charging cable.

The Dodge Charger Daytona has a charging capability of up to 183 kilowatts. Its 400-volt system can handle a maximum DC fast-charging speed of 183 kilowatts, meaning it can recharge its battery from 20% to 80% in roughly 28 minutes when hooked up to a 350-kw DC charging station. When charging at home using a 240-volt outlet, the Daytona's 11-kw onboard charger can top up the battery from 20% to 80% in 5.5 hours, or from 5% to 80% in around seven hours. A complete charge can take up to 10 hours. In 2025, Dodge plans to switch to the Tesla-inspired NACS charging standard.

The vehicle comes with a default 10.3-inch digital display for the driver's gauges, with an option to upgrade to a 16.0-inch screen, which is situated next to a 12.3-inch touch screen that supports wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and also includes a wireless charging pad for mobile devices. The car is equipped with a range of standard safety features, such as autonomous emergency braking that can detect pedestrians, a system to maintain lane position, cruise control that can adjust to a full stop, side-view monitors to detect vehicles in blind spots, and a system to monitor driver alertness.

Constructed in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, the Charger Daytona initially uses Samsung battery packs sourced from Korea during its first year, rendering it ineligible for the federal EV tax credit upon purchase, states Sam Abuelsamid, a leading analyst at Guidehouse. However, by around 2025, the collaborative facility between Stellantis and Samsung in Kokomo, Indiana, is expected to start manufacturing these battery packs, which would then make the vehicle eligible for the EV credit at the time of purchase.
