Canadian Firm Unveils Tesla-Powered Cyber-Hummer: Half the Weight, Full Electric Might
A Canada-based firm, known for converting vehicles into electric models, is constructing an electric version of the Hummer that's half the weight of General Motors' existing electric Hummer.
North American Electric Vehicles (NAEV) has set its sights on transforming ex-military Humvees—previously marketed to the public as the classic Hummer H1—by installing used Tesla engines, giving birth to the so-called Cyber-Hummer. The company asserts that this updated model, which it plans to begin distributing in the summer, tips the scales at 4,500 pounds.
That equates to approximately 50% of the weight of a brand new GMC Hummer EV and roughly 2,000 pounds lighter than the most basic version of a factory-made H1.
The first edition of NAEV's Executive line boasts an all-wheel drive system powered by two motors, delivering a purported 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet of torque. This allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. Equipped with a 75-kwh battery pack, the car is said to reach a maximum distance of 300 miles on a single charge. Furthermore, NAEV intends to support both NACS and CCS options for charging the vehicle.
Cybernetic Hummer by NAE
Jeffrey Kotulak, the founder of NAEV, explained to Green Car Reports that the significant reduction in weight is achieved by discarding the original heavy cast-iron parts of the suspension and geared hubs, along with the transfer case, transmission, and the systems for fuel and exhaust, all of which are unnecessary after the electric vehicle conversion.
NAEV has swapped out the original stock suspension for their unique "hybrid" independent suspension setup, which incorporates a mix of proprietary parts. Despite these changes, the Cyber-Hummer retains its robust 15-inch clearance from the ground, suitable for off-road adventures, and it's equipped with all-terrain tires attached to 20-inch alloy rims.
Kotulak mentioned that NAEV repurposes components from used Teslas and acquires Humvees through surplus auctions, highlighting that the decision to utilize pre-owned vehicles and parts is an environmentally responsible one.
Cybernetic NAEV Hummer
Kotulak pointed out that due to NAEV's Hummers weighing under 6,000 pounds, they qualify to be classified as Class 1 vehicles and are eligible for an on-road title.
Despite their initial purpose as military vehicles, these Hummers lack the contemporary safety features, protective measures for passengers, or collision prevention technology expected in modern vehicles.
The compromise for having a Hummer that has a lesser environmental impact than the GMC Hummer EV comes with its own drawbacks. Due to its significant weight and low efficiency, the GMC Hummer EV has been categorized with other fuel-hungry vehicles on the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)'s list of the most harmful vehicles for the environment.
The starting cost for the Executive Edition is set at $139,900. Additionally, NAEV has intentions to release Baja and Commander models, with the former being priced at $98,900 and the latter at $119,900. Once an order is received, the construction process takes about six months, with the company targeting the production of 328 vehicles each year, according to Kotulak.
