Tesla Owners Reinstall Traditional Controls: The Drive for Familiarity in a High-Tech World
Tesla has eliminated the use of indicator levers in their Model S, Model X, and Model 3 vehicles, yet vehicle owners are resorting to third-party components to reinstall these features.
InsideEVs has uncovered that third-party stalks can be purchased for roughly $400, and there are instructional YouTube clips demonstrating the installation process. According to one tutorial, the procedure is quite intricate, necessitating the detachment of the steering wheel to fit the stalks and the wiring up of controllers situated within the central console, which means further dismantling is needed.

The footage focuses on how to install third-party control arms in the updated Model 3, which became available in the U.S. market earlier in the year. This new iteration, referred to as the Highland, has removed the gear stick along with the usual control arms. However, the Model 3 isn't the sole Tesla vehicle that enthusiasts are modifying to reintroduce manual controls.
InsideEVs highlights that in 2021, owners of the Model S and Model X came up with a solution by utilizing the clock spring, stalks, and Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) from the existing Model 3 at the time. This alteration, which necessitated unique software for compatibility between the Model 3 components and the Model S/Model X systems, was a response to the steering yoke that was criticized by Consumer Reports for being uncomfortable and potentially risky.

Research has consistently highlighted that electric vehicles (EVs) tend to have more issues compared to other types of vehicles, not due to their electric engines, but rather due to the complicated systems that manufacturers tend to pair with them.
No other car company has gone to the same extremes as Tesla in eliminating traditional buttons and switches, but it's common for electric vehicle manufacturers to promote advanced technology to their buyers. However, it appears that Tesla's clientele is resisting this trend.
