Acura Unveils In-House EV Platform with Ohio-Built Electric SUV Concept at Monterey Car Week
Acura offers a sneak peek at a concept hinting at an EV made in the USA on a unique platform
Set to unveil an electric SUV concept at the upcoming 2024 Monterey Car Week, Acura gave us a glimpse of the future EV with a photo released on Friday.
The preview image gives away little, yet Acura has verified that the showcased vehicle is grounded on a proprietary electric vehicle platform designed from scratch. Furthermore, it's set to evolve into a commercial model that will be assembled in Ohio.
Acura, alongside its parent company Honda, has lagged in introducing convincing electric vehicles in the American market. However, they have plans to speed up their efforts over the coming years.
The latest initiative for electric vehicles is underway with the debut of the 2024 Acura ZDX and the 2024 Honda Prologue. Nonetheless, each of these SUVs operates on the Ultium EV platform and utilizes the battery technology provided by General Motors, with production taking place at GM's manufacturing facilities.
Acura and Honda are gearing up for their new lineup of electric vehicles by developing a unique platform. These upcoming EVs will be manufactured in the United States at the upgraded Marysville Auto Plant located in Ohio. Additionally, Honda is collaborating with LG to set up another Ohio facility dedicated to producing the batteries for these vehicles.
The upcoming platform will boast a state-of-the-art electric and electronic (E&E) framework, incorporating Honda's proprietary vehicle operating system and a suite of in-car software, complete with an advanced user interface and an array of digital features. Designed for versatility, this platform can accommodate a range of vehicle categories, with Honda announcing that the initial models will fall within the "mid-to-large" size spectrum. Furthermore, these vehicles aim to achieve a range exceeding 300 miles.
The inaugural automobile from Honda to utilize this framework is anticipated to belong to the newly unveiled 0 (Zero) Series lineup of electric vehicles. The initial offering from the 0 Series will be an electric vehicle manufactured in the United States, scheduled to hit the market in 2026. This is probably the same timeframe we can expect the Acura SUV, hinted at by the concept, to make its debut in dealerships.
The annual celebration of automobiles, known as Monterey Car Week, takes place from August 9th to the 18th and features various events for car lovers, such as The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, and the esteemed Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Acura has yet to announce the specific event where the concept will debut, but these exhibitions that highlight high-end and high-performance vehicles offer an ideal setting to introduce a significant electric vehicle.
