Price Surge and Missing Features: The 2025 Volvo EX90 Hits a Rough Patch Ahead of U.S. Launch
The cost of the 2025 Volvo EX90 has increased by $3,300 as the company prepares for its scheduled delivery in the United States later in the year, according to Automotive News.
The starting price on Volvo's website for their vehicle is currently displayed as $81,290, which includes a required destination fee of $1,295. This new price point places it above the maximum of $80,000 eligible for the federal electric vehicle tax incentive. Previously in November, when the pricing was revealed, Volvo had stated that the EX90 produced in the U.S. would have an initial price of $77,990, destination fee included.

A representative from Volvo communicated to Automotive News that the rise in material costs was the reason behind the hike in prices. They noted that both dealers and those who had pre-ordered were informed of the new prices on June 26, which was also when the website reflected the update. Volvo had started taking pre-orders the previous November; however, there were no definitive orders or non-refundable payments made prior to the announcement of the new pricing.
In June, Volvo informed its customers that the initial batch of EX90 vehicles would be delivered lacking certain elements such as specific driving assists, Apple CarPlay, and both Plug & Charge and bidirectional charging capabilities. Additionally, the company acknowledged a pending battery depletion problem that could lead to energy consumption in early models even when stationary. Volvo assured customers that these omitted features would be subsequently provided at no extra cost through wireless updates, which would also resolve the energy usage concern.

The EX90, which was revealed in November 2022, had its initial delivery timeline set for the beginning of 2024. However, due to lingering software problems, this schedule was delayed. Volvo has adjusted its delivery plans, aiming to get the first batch of these vehicles to American customers in the latter part of this year. Meanwhile, the company has commenced the manufacturing process for the EX90 at its production facility in South Carolina.
Production of the Polestar 3 is scheduled to occur in South Carolina, sharing the production line with the EX90, with both vehicles encountering similar software delays. These SUVs share a common foundation; however, the Polestar is designed to offer seating for two rows, in contrast to the Volvo's three-row seating arrangement. There's uncertainty surrounding whether the Polestar 3 will be released with incomplete features or if there will be an increase in its pricing.
