Yamaha’s Wet Woes: Mugello Test Washout Forces Team to Rethink Strategy Ahead of Valencia
Yamaha faced challenges at the soggy Mugello test, unable to conduct any of their planned evaluations
Yamaha expressed frustration, noting that their original strategy had to be completely abandoned due to the conditions, preventing them from achieving any of their objectives.
Rainy weather during the Mugello MotoGP trial disrupted plans for teams such as Yamaha, who conceded that the day was wasted since they were unable to evaluate any new components.
Intense rainfall on Monday resulted in numerous riders and teams being unable to trial new components, yet for Yamaha, who faced greater challenges than others in 2024, testing periods are just as vital as the actual race days.
Missing track time will be detrimental to the Japanese team, but Monster Yamaha Team Director, Massimo Meregalli, conveyed to MotoGP.com that a compensatory two-day test session in Valencia has been arranged to counteract the loss.
"Meregalli admitted to MotoGP.com following Monday's test, "Regrettably, that's the case. Tests always have their value, and we took the opportunity to tweak the electronic controls somewhat, as they can always use improvement.
"Additionally, from the front grip, there's a lesson to be learned. Our original strategy was entirely distinct, and regrettably, we were unable to accomplish any of the goals we had set out to achieve."
"Fortunately, we had arranged a trial in Valencia ten days prior after the Kazakhstan event was called off. This should allow us to assess everything we intended to accomplish here in Mugello."
"We're planning to head to Valencia on June 11th and 12th. Fingers crossed, the conditions will be clear for the test."
Meregalli has verified that following Cal Crutchlow's recent operation, only the permanent racers, Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins, will participate in the testing session in Valencia.
"Meregalli mentioned that only Fabio and Alex will participate as Cal is recovering from surgery and won't be available for a while."
Regarding the upcoming trials in Valencia, Meregalli remained tight-lipped about the precise components Yamaha intends to examine. Nevertheless, he provided some insight into the issues they aim to address.
Meregalli stated, "Our focus is on enhancing the bike's initial cornering capabilities. This aspect has been challenging for us, and we've devised several strategies to better the braking and approach, as these are the primary concerns raised by both of our riders."
