Volvo EX90’s Rocky Rollout: Battery Drain Concerns and Missing Features Plague 2025 Launch
The newly released 2025 Volvo EX90 electric model faces a battery depletion problem
The manufacturing of the latest electric SUV model, the 2025 Volvo EX90, commenced recently in South Carolina. However, the initial batch will be shipped out missing some software-related functions and a pending issue related to battery discharge.
A Motor1 reader was the first to notice an email from Volvo to its clients, revealing that the new cars will be missing Apple CarPlay and certain anticipated safety functionalities. These include the forward collision warning system that also has forward automatic emergency braking to recognize objects crossing in front of the car, as well as the operational capabilities of the EX90's integrated lidar technology.
Moreover, the initial batch of cars will be equipped with adaptive cruise control and Volvo's Pilot Assist for highway driving, yet they will be missing the anticipated function that slows down the vehicle when approaching bends.

Cars are also set to consume a certain amount of power even when stationary in order to maintain the main computer system operational. According to Volvo, this power usage will not exceed 3% of the total battery life over a full day, and will cease if the car remains parked and uncharged for a period exceeding 72 hours. Additionally, the capabilities for direct plug-in charging and two-way charging won't be available right away.
The absent functionalities will be included at no extra cost through upcoming wireless upgrades, which are set to introduce a light mode for the main touchscreen and the digital dashboard. Additionally, a representative from Volvo mentioned that the need to utilize the battery to operate the main computer when the vehicle is stationary will be rectified in an upcoming software patch.
The launch of the EX90, initially set for November 2022, faced delays with its first batch of vehicles intended for early 2024 delivery being postponed because of lingering software problems. Volvo has adjusted its schedule and is now aiming to get the first batch of these vehicles to American customers in the latter part of the current year.

The identical delay stemming from software issues has likewise impacted the Polestar 3, scheduled to commence its production with the EX90 in South Carolina come August. There's ambiguity surrounding whether the Polestar will be delivered with incomplete features as well.
Both SUVs are built on the same base structure. However, the Polestar offers seating across two rows, in contrast to the EX90 which provides a third-row seating option, available with a bench style or individual captain's chairs. The pricing for these setups starts at $77,990 and $78,490, including destination charges. This suggests that some models from this range are expected to fall below the $80,000 price limit that qualifies for the federal electric vehicle tax credit.
This week, Volvo announced a postponement in the launch of the base model 2025 EX30. Initially expected to hit the U.S. market this summer, the compact electric SUV's delivery has been pushed back to 2025. This change in schedule enables Volvo to distribute the U.S. models from Ghent, Belgium, rather than from China, sidestepping potential fresh tariffs on vehicles manufactured in China.
