Exterior
Volkswagen has once again opted for subtle refinements to the exterior design, ensuring that previous models don't appear outdated. The 2024 version is primarily distinguished by its reimagined front end, featuring prominent side air curtains and updated headlights, similar to those on the refreshed standard Golf, now connected by an illuminated strip.
All Golf R models now come standard with what are referred to as LED Plus headlights. For the first time, the R is also featuring an illuminated VW badge on the front.
The modifications to the rear end are limited to a new tail light configuration, now offering a customizable welcome light for the first time. Additionally, models equipped with the "Performance Package" can be identified by an especially large, air-permeable roof spoiler at the back, which enhances downforce.
The exhaust system maintains the standard quad-flow version, with the choice of upgrading to an Akrapovic system that now has a slightly more robust sound. However, the visually striking diffuser might be somewhat compromised by the inclusion of a tow hitch – a first for the Golf R – which is capable of towing up to 1,900 kg.

Engine
There's been an upgrade under the hood as well. The power has been boosted by 10 kW (13 horsepower) compared to the previous model, bringing it to a total of 333 horsepower. This matches the power level of the special edition "20 Years R" and the Golf R 333, making it the standard output across the lineup. The peak torque remains the same at 420 Nm. For the first time, this level of power is also available in the Golf R Estate.
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is now faster, taking only 4.6 or 4.8 seconds for the Variant model. With the latest generation's "Performance Package," the top speed can increase by an additional 20 km/h, reaching up to 270 km/h, which is an improvement of 1.7 km/h over the previous figures.
Wheels
Volkswagen has introduced a fresh and attractive wheel design to the updated Golf R collection. Named "Warmenau," after a district in Wolfsburg, these 19-inch forged wheels stand out by weighing just eight kilograms per rim, making them about 20 percent lighter than similar alloy wheels.

This leads to a decrease in unsprung weight, which is expected to enhance the vehicle's handling. Furthermore, the rims' exceptionally large open area (71 percent) contributes to the brakes' increased stability and wear resistance. As a result, the brakes are especially thermally relieved on the racetrack.
Chassis
In the chassis department, the vehicle dynamics manager has undergone recalibration to ensure all pertinent systems are interconnected. This manager coordinates the electromechanical features of the all-wheel drive, the electronic differential lock, and the lateral dynamic components of the DCC dampers with each driving maneuver.
The system incorporates the 4MOTION all-wheel drive with R-Performance Torque Vectoring. For the first time, the previously optional adaptive chassis control DCC comes standard in Germany. We had the opportunity to test out its effectiveness.
In the Golf R, drivers can choose from the driving modes "Comfort," "Sport," "Race," and "Individual," and with the addition of the Performance Package, "Special" and "Drift" are also available. Now, the "Eco" mode has been added to this range to make leisurely drives more environmentally friendly. All modes have been fine-tuned, with the "R" mode receiving a significant enhancement.

Interior
Significant advancements have been made within the interior, particularly in the infotainment sector, which was essential due to the initial issues encountered with the early Golf 8. The Golf R now relies on the latest generation infotainment system, which features a large, standalone display and a thoroughly revamped menu navigation.
From our own experience, we've found that the updated system now consistently operates smoothly, and it's also much more intuitively organized, allowing users to bookmark numerous features as favorites.
Increased Focus on Golf:
The "Digital Cockpit Pro" in the performance package models has been upgraded to include a new acceleration sensor and a GPS-based lap timer. However, when it comes to the steering wheel, VW has decided not to revert to the previous model with the well-received physical buttons demanded by customers. Instead, the touch-sensitive control buttons will continue to be used.
The reason is simple: a mechanical multi-functional steering wheel with an "R button" has never existed. And it seems a completely new development was likely scrapped due to budget cuts. So, the touch continues to rule over the press.

Specific prices have not been disclosed yet. However, we've been informed that the new Golf R is expected to be offered at a lower price than before, currently around 55,000 euros, despite its increased performance, standard DCC, and enhancements. If that isn't great news!
