Toyota’s Electric Vision: A Tenfold Surge in EV Production and Pioneering Solid-State Batteries by 2026

Published

on

Toyota's strategy for electric vehicles includes increasing production to a minimum of one million vehicles by 2026, with an additional initiative to begin producing solid-state batteries on Japanese soil.

The car manufacturer had earlier set a goal of 1.5 million electric vehicles by 2026, but the revised figure still signifies an almost ten times rise from the figures projected for 2023, as pointed out by Reuters.

Toyota has indicated that these figures are simply target indicators for its investors. Though the company may maintain a focus on hybrid vehicles, aiming for a production of one million electric vehicles by 2026 represents a significant challenge for the car manufacturer.

Toyota has intentions to commence production of their cutting-edge solid-state batteries shortly after they escalate their electric vehicle production. On Friday, the car manufacturer announced that it had gained clearance from authorities in Japan for a proposal to progressively initiate the manufacturing of future-generation battery cells from 2026, which encompasses solid-state cells. These three sophisticated cell varieties could potentially hit annual production figures of up to 9 gigawatt-hours.

These figures will equate to specialized models—potentially totaling close to 100,000 long-range electric vehicles in all, possibly—meaning these won't be mass-produced EVs but rather high-end luxury vehicles, performance vehicles, or similar types.

In September of the previous year, Toyota presented a technological blueprint highlighting the development of sophisticated lithium-ion batteries, alongside two iterations of solid-state batteries, suggesting a potential reduction in rapid charging duration to a mere 10 minutes. Collaborative efforts on foundational solid-state technology have been underway between Toyota and other Japanese enterprises, namely Panasonic and Idemitsu Kosan.

Toyota in the United States has entered into an extended supply deal with LG for batteries, which will be produced at LG's Michigan plant to power electric vehicles built in the U.S., such as an SUV from Kentucky. However, the latest production developments indicate that the most sophisticated battery cells, such as solid-state batteries, will be manufactured in Japan.

The ongoing paperwork indicates that Toyota is gearing up for a significant increase in electric vehicle manufacturing, a stark contrast to their present minimal output. However, last year, they forecasted that by 2030, their production of hydrogen-powered vehicles would surpass that of electric vehicles with solid-state batteries.
