Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD Outpaces Ioniq 6 with Superior Range and Lower Price Tag

Tesla reintroduces a Long Range variant with rear-wheel drive for its refreshed Model 3, surpassing the Ioniq 6 in distance capacity. This version, which is less expensive by $5,000, opts for a single motor instead of the dual-motor all-wheel drive configuration.

Reuters was the first to notice the introduction of Tesla's latest Model 3 Long Range with rear-wheel drive on their digital configuration tool this past Thursday. It's priced starting at $42,490 excluding delivery fees. This model boasts a 363-mile driving range, which is a step up from the 341-mile range of the $47,490 all-wheel drive Model 3 Long Range and surpasses the former Model 3 Long Range's 358-mile range.

Today's rear-wheel drive Long Range variant holds the record for the most distance that can be traveled on a single charge among all existing Model 3 versions, setting a new benchmark for the Model 3's maximum range capability.

The updated version of the Tesla Model 3 for the European market

The Tesla not only presents a more affordable option compared to its main competitor in the U.S. market, the Hyundai Ioniq 6, but it also boasts a longer driving range on paper. Priced at $43,600, the 2024 model of the Ioniq 6 SE offers a range of 361 miles as per the EPA's rating. However, the comparison may not be straightforward since Tesla applies a distinct adjustment factor to its range estimates, which could result in the Ioniq 6 delivering better actual range performance.

The Model 3 Long Range, equipped with a solitary motor that powers the rear wheels, is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 4.9 seconds according to Tesla's own estimates. This is nearly one second faster than the Ioniq 5 SE. It also boasts a maximum speed of 125 mph.

Tesla unveiled the revamped version of its Model 3 vehicle, referred to as "Highland" within the company, in the United States at the start of the year. The makeover included a makeover of the car's external design, a reduction in interior noise, and the introduction of new amenities such as air-conditioned seats in the front, the ability to wirelessly charge two devices at once, and a screen measuring 8.0 inches for those seated in the back. Tesla has also eliminated the majority of manual buttons and switches, making the 15.4-inch central touchscreen the primary interface for drivers.

Updated European Version of Tesla Model 3

Within the United States, the Model 3 Highland initially hit the market with a standard rear-wheel drive option, starting at $38,990 before adding shipping costs, along with an all-wheel drive version with extended range. Come April, the Model 3 Performance made a comeback, featuring an adjustable suspension system, a swift acceleration capability of 0-60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, and was initially priced at $52,990, which later increased to $54,990. With the introduction of the rear-wheel drive Model 3 Long Range, the Highland series now expands to a total of four different models.

The associated Tesla Model Y has not been updated with the Highland, now referred to as Juniper, enhancements. However, reductions in the price of the Model Y in April mean it is now up to $5,000 less expensive than the Model 3 when considering the $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax incentive.
