Switching to Electric: How Pickup Truck Drivers Can Lead the Charge in Fuel Savings
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, those driving pickup trucks may see the biggest reduction in fuel costs if they switch to electric vehicles compared to traditional gas-powered ones.
Trucks are generally larger than other types of vehicles, which leads to higher energy usage and therefore a higher chance for cost savings when that energy expense is decreased, as the Department of Energy (DOE) pointed out. Additionally, cutting down on the use of gas or diesel almost certainly ensures a reduction in these energy expenses.
Research from Argonne National Laboratory has provided ZIP code-specific estimates on the financial benefits of switching from traditional gasoline vehicles to equivalent electric vehicles (EVs) or plug-in hybrids. The findings suggest that pickup trucks offer the highest possible savings when making the switch, with vans and SUVs coming in next.
Potential for reducing fuel costs by transitioning to Electric Vehicles or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (according to the Department of Energy)
The Department of Energy (DOE) points out that the higher the degree of a vehicle's electric capabilities, the more substantial the cost benefits. They highlight that a fully electric vehicle, when compared to a plug-in hybrid of equivalent size, is expected to offer more significant savings.
Consumer Reports has analyzed the data and highlighted that there could be significant cost reductions for electric trucks and SUVs. Electrification may not demand major compromises as well. A study conducted in 2022 revealed that electric alternatives could feasibly replace over 50% of pickup trucks, leading to considerable financial benefits.

These results should be considered with a few reservations. A thorough report by the DOE in 2020, which remains relevant, emphasized that the expenses associated with electric vehicles can differ greatly based on the location of charging and the method used (for instance, whether it's through a public charging station or a private home charger).
The cost of acquiring new electric trucks currently remains steep. Affordable models of electric trucks designed for fleet use, such as those from the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado EV lines, are not widely available at this point.
