Rain Dampens Yamaha’s Mugello Test, Valencia Offers Second Chance
Yamaha “Unable to Test Anything Planned” Due to Wet Conditions at Mugello
Yamaha has expressed disappointment, stating: “Our original plan was completely different, and sadly, we couldn't accomplish any of the objectives we had set out for ourselves.”
Rainy weather during the Mugello MotoGP test created significant difficulties for teams such as Yamaha. They conceded that the day was unproductive because they were unable to try out any of their new components.
Due to the heavy rainfall on Monday, numerous riders and teams couldn't test new components. However, Yamaha, facing significant challenges in 2024, finds testing to be just as important as race weekends.
The Japanese manufacturer will be at a disadvantage due to the loss of track time. Nonetheless, Monster Yamaha Team Director Massimo Meregalli informed MotoGP.com that an additional two-day testing session has been arranged in Valencia to compensate for this.
“It’s a reality we have to accept,” Meregalli mentioned to MotoGP.com following Monday’s test session. “Testing always provides value, and we took advantage of the opportunity to fine-tune the electronic controls, as they are constantly in need of improvement.”
"We will also gain some insights regarding the front grip. Our original strategy was completely different, but unfortunately, we weren't able to implement any of our planned actions."
“Fortunately, we arranged a test in Valencia ten days ago because the event in Kazakhstan was called off. We are optimistic that we can assess everything we planned to do here in Mugello during that test.”
"We are planning a trip to Valencia on June 11th and 12th. Let's hope for dry weather during the test."
Following Cal Crutchlow's recent surgery, Meregalli announced that only the regular riders, Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins, will participate in the testing in Valencia.
"Only Fabio and Alex will be available, as Cal is recovering from surgery and will be out for a significant period," Meregalli stated. "We can't rely on him."
Regarding the upcoming Valencia test, Meregalli did not disclose the exact components Yamaha will evaluate. Nonetheless, he hinted at the issues they aim to address.
Meregalli stated, "Our goal is to enhance the bike's initial cornering. We are struggling in this aspect and have developed various solutions to improve braking and entry, which are the primary concerns raised by both riders."
