Porsche Accelerates Toward an All-Electric Future: Gas-Powered Era to End by 2026
Porsche is set to phase out gasoline engines starting in 2026
According to a Reuters article, the move is not a surprise given Porsche's recent focus on electrifying its lineup with models like the Taycan electric sedan and the soon-to-be-released Macan EV.
The uptake of electric vehicles is experiencing a deceleration across numerous international markets. However, as Porsche executive Albrecht Reimold shared with Automobilwoche magazine, their combustion engine model, the Macan, has come to the conclusion of its predetermined production span.
The gasoline-powered Macan is no longer available in Porsche's lineup for Europe, yet it maintains strong sales in regions where it's still popular, such as the United States.
Reimold has affirmed to the publication that the combustion engine models of the compact 718 sports cars will cease to be produced in 2025. The electric models of these cars are anticipated to debut by the close of 2024, with the market release slated for the latter part of 2025. The pair of electric sports cars might be built with a centrally-located battery pack to achieve the best balance of weight, similar to the design seen in Porsche's Mission R concept that featured a two-motor all-wheel-drive setup.

Porsche is rapidly transitioning to electric vehicles, drawing on insights gained from its Taycan model. The latest 2025 version of the Taycan has undergone significant upgrades, increasing its maximum travel distance by as much as 35%.
This autumn, the United States will witness the debut of the Macan Electric, marking Porsche's inaugural foray into utilizing the novel PPE (Premium Platform Electric) structure, which it has developed in collaboration with the Audi Q6 E-Tron and A6 E-Tron. The new model will incorporate elements from the Taycan, notably a top fast-charging capability of 270-kw and the innovative "bank charging" system that splits the 800-volt battery into two segments of 400 volts each, enabling simultaneous charging. Porsche boasts that this setup allows the full 100-kwh battery to boost its charge from 10% to 80% in a mere 22 minutes, or alternatively, to gain an additional 60 miles of driving distance in just four minutes.
