Outpaced by the Past: Discontinued Bolt EV Surprisingly Outsells Chevy Blazer EV in First Half of 2024

General Motors has discontinued the production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV, yet it managed to surpass the sales of Chevy's Blazer EV in the initial six months of this year, as indicated by the latest financial and sales figures from the company.

General Motors reported sales of 8,414 units for both the Bolt EV and the Bolt EUV models combined during the first half of the year, which surpassed the 7,234 units sold of the Blazer EV. Yet, in the second quarter specifically, the Blazer EV outperformed the Bolt EV and EUV, with 6,634 units sold compared to the latter's 1,374 units.

The disparity is indicative of the ongoing decrease in Bolt EV/EUV shipments following the cessation of their production at 2023's conclusion, in contrast to the Blazer EV's manufacturing which has been increasing. However, the Blazer EV has not significantly outpaced the now-discontinued Bolt EV in cumulative sales to date, highlighting the slow pace of its production increase.

General Motors initiated the distribution of its Blazer EV model in July, but the pace has been sluggish. The company faced challenges in increasing the delivery of electric vehicles throughout 2023, largely due to difficulties in scaling up production of its Ultium battery cells. In the second quarter, GM saw a rise in electric vehicle deliveries, reaching 21,930, which is a 34% increase from the first quarter and a 40% rise compared to the same period last year, signaling an improvement in their delivery rates. However, the ambition to roll out 400,000 electric vehicles by 2023, extending into the first half of 2024, has evidently not been met.

General Motors reduced the cost of the Blazer Electric Vehicle in March, but it seems that this has not yet resulted in an increase in sales, apart from dealing with a previous sales halt due to a backlog and software problems. However, the limited sales have attracted a significant proportion of desirable "conquest" clients, who are switching from competing automakers. According to GM, 40% of the Blazer EV purchasers previously owned vehicles from competitors such as Jeep, Ford, Hyundai, and Kia.
