Mazda’s Electric Surge: The EZ-6 Sedan Set to Electrify Europe and Outshine the Mazda 6
Mazda EZ-6: New Electric Sedan Expected to Launch in Europe
This model is set to replace the current Mazda 6
It was a hopeful anticipation, and now it's confirmed: PR Newswire reports that the Mazda EZ-6 is scheduled to enter mass production in Fall 2024 as an international model, specifically targeting the European and Chinese markets.
A potential successor to the twelve-year-old Mazda 6 model, specifically the sedan version, could be on the horizon. The Mazda 6 production was halted in Japan at the end of April 2024, with the expectation that other markets will soon follow suit. It's anticipated that the CX-60 might replace the station wagon variant. Additionally, Mazda secured the rights to the name and logo "6e" in Europe. Currently, Mazda's electric vehicle lineup is limited to the MX-30, which offers a modest driving range. Therefore, there are several clues that, when pieced together, could suggest a strategic move by Mazda.
However, let's revisit what the fellow journalists have reported. They mention that Mazda recently showcased the design and development process of the EZ-6 to Chinese consumers for the first time at its headquarters in Hiroshima. In July, the vehicle was successfully produced at Changan Mazda, Mazda's joint venture in China.

Mazda and Changan Mazda have simultaneously penned an agreement to collaborate on exporting electric vehicles, designating Changan Mazda as the sole Chinese research and development, as well as manufacturing hub for new energy vehicles for the global market. This clearly indicates that the EZ-6 will be Mazda's inaugural worldwide new-energy vehicle.
The EZ-6 is set to debut as a worldwide model in the fall of 2024, with initial availability in China and Europe (likely starting in 2025). Mazda aims to leverage its extensive experience in dynamic performance enhancement from the combustion engine era to elevate the driving experience of the EZ-6 and surpass the unity of car and driver, known as Jinba-Ittai, found in the 6 model.
Earlier, specialists from Mazda's European R&D center completed the dynamic performance tuning and validation of the EZ-6 at the Chongqing Automobile Testing Grounds, which are known to have the most stringent requirements for automotive testing in China.

The Mazda EZ-6 is equipped with software and electrification technologies from Changan Automobile, Mazda's partner in China. This innovative vehicle comes with level 2.5 autonomous driving support, a 7nm Qualcomm SA8155P processor, four high-definition surround-view cameras, and twelve advanced ultrasonic radars. It is designed to handle a range of smart driving scenarios such as self-parking, remote-controlled parking, intelligent remote parking, and trace-back parking capabilities.
The fate of the electric concept Arata, similar in size to the CX-5, remains undecided. It was displayed alongside the EZ-6 at the Auto China 2024 event. At that time, it was announced: "In addition, the Mazda Arata concept model, which was unveiled concurrently, is expected to enter mass production as the second new electrified vehicle by the end of 2025 and will be launched in the Chinese market."
Evaluating the Mazda 6 and CX-60:
Mazda isn't just focusing on electric vehicles for their future endeavors. At the end of May, they entered into an agreement with Subaru and Toyota to collaborate on the development of future combustion engines. At the time, Mazda's CEO Masahiro Moro made a statement on the matter.
Mazda is committed to providing their customers with thrilling vehicles by refining internal combustion engines for the new era of electrification and broadening the avenues to achieve carbon neutrality through various means. Recognizing the rotary engine's adaptability with electrification and carbon-neutral fuels, Mazda intends to advance this technology through collaborative efforts and innovation to guarantee its significant impact on society.
