Marquez Secures Ducati Factory Seat: Dall’Igna Declares ‘Best Team in Ducati History
Gigi Dall’Igna persuades Marquez as the ideal pick | Declares “Ducati’s greatest team ever”
Gigi Dall’Igna: "I firmly believe Marquez is the perfect choice. Our current team is the best Ducati has ever had."
Gigi Dall’Igna, the general manager of Ducati Corse, confessed that he had experienced sleepless nights and changed his mind repeatedly while deciding whether to award the prestigious 2025 factory seat to current title leader Jorge Martin or Marc Marquez.
In the end, Dall’Igna is certain that picking Marquez was the correct decision. With Marquez holding six MotoGP titles and his soon-to-be teammate Francesco Bagnaia boasting two, Dall’Igna thinks Ducati now has its strongest team to date.
"I’m hoping that tonight will be the first time I truly get some rest,” Dall’Igna mentioned to SkySport.it.
Making this choice was challenging for both athletic and personal reasons, as no rider has ever acted improperly or broken any rules.
"I've gone back and forth with my decision lately, but ultimately, I'm certain that choosing Marquez is the right move. We have the strongest team Ducati has ever had. I'm truly thrilled."
"The choice was finalized on Sunday at Mugello," Dall'Igna mentioned. "We didn't have much time to iron out the specifics of the agreement."
Dall’Igna confessed that Ducati wanted to retain both Martin and Marquez.
However, with the eight-time world champion dismissing the idea of moving to Pramac, and the chance of a factory bike at Gresini seemingly off the table, they decided to fully commit to #93.
He mentioned that their objective had been to retain both Martin and Marquez, fully aware from the outset of the significant challenges involved. Despite their persistent efforts up until the final moments, they eventually recognized that it was unfeasible.
"The choice came down to placing our bets on either Martin or Marquez. It was a tough call, but ultimately, we decided to go with Marc."
Marquez's standout performance among the eight Ducati riders, despite only having participated in seven GPs on a one-year-old Desmosedici, worked to his advantage.
Dall’Igna stated that in recent months, he has realized he can have an impact with our motorcycle.
"Our motorcycle has achieved outstanding performance, so having riders like Marquez and Bagnaia greatly boosts our prospects of securing the World Championship title, which is our main objective."
Dall’Igna believes that there is not much difference between upcoming teammates Bagnaia and Marquez, as they are the only riders on the grid with multiple premier-class championships.
"They are both winners. They are resolute. They have faced hardships and understand what it means to endure," Dall’Igna mentioned. "It's during those times that the true champion's spirit emerges. In my view, yes, they will compete on a level playing field."
On Monday evening, Martin finalized a contract with Aprilia, while it is expected that Bagnaia’s present teammate, Enea Bastianini, will transfer to KTM and race for Tech3.
