Marc Marquez Reflects on Mistakes and Prospects for 2024 MotoGP Title
Marc Marquez admits that his frequent errors are hindering his chances of competing for the 2024 title.
What is the eight-time world champion's evaluation of his prospects for the championship?
Marc Marquez remains open to the possibility of competing for the 2024 MotoGP world title. However, he emphasizes that he must avoid repeating the errors he made at the San Marino Grand Prix.
Gresini Ducati's racer has closed the gap to just 53 points behind the championship leader Jorge Martin. This comes after Marquez, starting from ninth place on the grid, navigated challenging conditions to secure his second grand prix victory of the season.
As there are still 259 points available over the next seven rounds and favorable tracks ahead for Marquez, he has become a more significant contender in the championship race.
However, following his crash in Q2 which resulted in him finishing ninth at Misano, along with several other recent errors that have cost him points, Marquez acknowledges that he needs to eliminate these mistakes if he aims to be competitive.
“You can never be certain,” he responded when questioned about whether the championship appeared more attainable now.
"When you travel outside of Europe, particularly to Asia, you become aware of how the conditions can be at times."
"However, I maintain my mindset: to contend for the championship, we cannot afford to start in ninth position on the grid."
"We must avoid repeating the errors I made during the qualifying session. It's important to continue progressing, and that's what I'll aim to do in the next two weeks."
Current world champion Francesco Bagnaia, trailing Martin by seven points following the San Marino event, believes that Marquez still remains a viable contender for the title.
He cited his variable standings at Misano to illustrate this point, while also emphasizing that his Ducati teammate, Enea Bastianini, remains a significant contender in the championship race.
When questioned about Marquez’s chances of winning the title, Bagnaia responded, "You can never be certain."
"Consider my position. Yesterday, following the sprint, I was trailing by 26 points, and now the gap is just seven."
“Things can shift rapidly for both Marc and Enea.”
"We are aware of Marc's capabilities, and it seems he has rediscovered the form he showed earlier in the season."
"Therefore, never count Marc out of the title race. Similarly, don't exclude Enea from the list of title contenders. Regardless, we will strive to consistently perform as we did today."
After securing victories in the last two grand prix races, Marquez believes he is nearing a consistent level of performance similar to his 2019 form, when he claimed his sixth premier class championship.
Nevertheless, he mentions that there are "still a few areas" he needs to improve on.
He remarked, "Yes, 2019 and 2021 weren't bad."
"There was a span of time encompassing Aragon, Austin, and Misano in 2021 that wasn't too shabby."
"However, it is accurate to say that under the typical conditions we experienced this weekend, it was reminiscent of 2019… though 2019 was still a level beyond."
"But now I sense that I can maneuver my body better, and I begin to handle the bike with more skill."
"There are still a few areas that need improvement, like Turns 11 and 12 at Misano where Pecco excels. We need to analyze this before the next weekend. I might not be able to match his speed, but the goal is to get as close as possible."
"There are still a few things left to learn, but each time you gain confidence, you can move more freely and increase your speed."
