Marc Marquez Ends Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted to placing high expectations on himself to achieve an impeccable performance at the Aragon MotoGP event. He confessed that during the Sprint, he didn't find it enjoyable because he was aware of the significance of the day.
After nearly three years without a win, Marc Marquez broke his losing streak by clinching victory at last weekend's Aragon MotoGP. He called the weekend "perfect".
Marquez led every practice session, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Sunday Grand Prix five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which remained damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
During the press conference after the race, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
He expressed that the race gave them a fantastic sensation right from the start. He mentioned that it was an exceptionally lengthy race, making it challenging to keep his emotions in check during the final laps. However, upon crossing the finish line, he felt as though he had shed 3–4 kilograms.
“Due to the increasing pain in my back with each step, winning felt unbelievable. Right away, my thoughts went to the entire journey we’ve been through, all the supportive people around me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez.
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me the chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give it my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and are continuing to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate during the last few laps.
“In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium,” he mentioned. “But more than that, I was thinking about the Gresini garage, which is always lively and cheerful, like a constant celebration.”
"Additionally, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging times, having a compassionate and caring team, who were more affected by my struggles than I was, truly made a difference."
"It was an unusual celebration; in past races, the adrenaline rush was greater even when celebrating second or third places. Today, however, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marc Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to finish the weekend with a win in the Grand Prix after leading all sessions except the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure today," he remarked. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today would be and recognized the significant opportunity it presented."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay focused. When you have the necessary speed, it appears easier to handle the situation, maintain consistency, and act wisely; however, you're essentially the same person. Without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
“Let’s aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to keep up with the leading competitors.”
Marquez views this victory as significant as his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first success following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez compared it to his experience in Germany in 2021, stating that he considers them to be on the same level.
“When you experience numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win changes."
"While I did achieve 60 wins, those two victories, along with my initial MotoGP win, stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost in confidence that makes a real difference."
"I hadn't been feeling well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just riding effortlessly and smoothly, but I made sure to stay very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he had believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is on the horizon. He recognized that they will have their chances. However, he noted that competing for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
