Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Winless Streak with ‘Perfect’ Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He also revealed that he didn't find the Sprint race enjoyable because he was aware of the significance of the day.
After nearly three years without a win, Marc Marquez broke his streak by securing a triumph in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect".
Marquez led every practice session, secured the pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, triumphed in the Sprint race convincingly, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez didn't lead the Warm Up session, as it was damp from rain that fell overnight from Saturday to Sunday morning, and he didn't record a lap time.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they had led all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three years without a win and the relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we had an incredible sensation right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely lengthy, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
"With each step, my back felt increasingly burdened, making this victory even more remarkable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the journey we undertook, the support of everyone around me, and the love of my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, and the Gresini team in particular offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to ponder various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he commented. "Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's constantly a celebration there."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. During extremely challenging times, being in a tough spot, if you're not supported by a compassionate and kind team who are even more affected by the situation than you are — that truly made a difference."
The celebration felt unusual because, in other races, the adrenaline rush was greater even when celebrating second or third places. However, today's emotions surpassed the adrenaline.
After leading in every session except for the rain-affected Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he experienced some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he remarked. "As you could see in the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I made an effort to maintain my focus. When you have the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the situation well, showing consistency and intelligence; however, you're essentially the same person. Without the speed, though, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and work towards matching the performance of the leading competitors."
Having secured the win, Marquez places it on par with his victory at the 2021 German Grand Prix, his first major success following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez commented, "I consider it to be on the same level as Germany in 2021."
"When facing numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of your victories becomes greater."
"Although I have achieved 60 wins, those two victories, along with my initial MotoGP win, stand out as the most significant because they boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide an additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was merely riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but I made a special effort to avoid any errors."
Marquez mentioned that even though this marked his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the test in Valencia, Marquez mentioned that he felt confident a victory was on the horizon. He acknowledged that the team would have their chances. However, he noted that contending for the championship is another matter and emphasized the need for continued effort.
"However, it was in Valencia that I began to realize it would come eventually."
