Mainstream Brands Eclipse Tesla in EV Owner Satisfaction, J.D. Power Study Reveals
Research indicates that electric vehicles from established car makers are outperforming Tesla in pleasing customers, as Tesla struggles to captivate first-time buyers of its brand, in contrast to the successful electric ventures of conventional auto brands.
In what appears to be a surprising shift, the latest J.D. Power APEAL study released on Thursday reveals that individuals who own electric vehicles not made by Tesla are happier with their cars than those who own a Tesla.
However, it's not merely about outperforming Tesla. According to Power, electric vehicles from brands other than Tesla score better in terms of customer satisfaction compared to Tesla cars, as well as surpassing traditional gas-powered and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
APEAL, an acronym for Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout, gathered feedback from 99,144 individuals who purchased new vehicles of the 2024 model year, after owning them for a span of 90 days. J.D. Power emphasizes that historically, this study has shown a connection to the future resale value of cars, implying that expecting your new Tesla to increase in value over time might be misguided.
Electric vehicles (EVs) from popular manufacturers weren't catching on as much in the past few years, as J.D. Power highlighted that these EVs, excluding those from Tesla, were not living up to the satisfaction levels of their gasoline counterparts. However, they have been making progress. Tesla was the unofficial leader in the study for 2020 and 2021. By the previous year, J.D. Power noted that the gap in satisfaction between non-Tesla electric vehicles and traditional gas vehicles had significantly narrowed.
J.D. Power highlighted enhanced storage within the vehicle and superior material quality as some of the factors contributing to the increased satisfaction with established mainstream car manufacturers.
"According to J.D. Power's senior director of auto benchmarking, Frank Hanley, the latest releases from established carmakers have outdone the long-standing front-runner Tesla in terms of the emotional connection and thrill that owners experience with their newly purchased battery electric vehicles (BEVs)."

Tesla must captivate first-time buyers, not solely enthusiasts
The problem partly lies in the fact that Tesla's clientele is splitting between devoted returning customers (the “Tesla enthusiasts”) and fresh “convert” purchasers who have switched from different manufacturers to an electric vehicle for their initial experience. It seems that Tesla's cars aren't making a significant impact on the convert buyers.
Hanley informed Green Car Reports that the demographic of their customers is undergoing a transformation. Initially, they attracted a clientele heavily comprised of technology enthusiasts, but it's evident that with the recent adjustment in pricing, they are now appealing to a broader, more varied consumer base.
Hanley noted that the acquisition of customers for Tesla is now a widespread phenomenon, particularly for the Model 3 and Model Y. This is due in part to a range of price reductions by Tesla, making these models more accessible to a broader customer base.
According to Hanley, there's a significant disparity in contentment levels between repeat Tesla owners and first-time buyers, with the difference being wider than that seen across all luxury car brands. Newcomers to Tesla have a range of complaints that touch on various facets of owning the vehicle, rather than any isolated issue, he noted.

In the latest assessment, Porsche emerged as the leading luxury brand with significant electric vehicle allure, with the Porsche Taycan matching the performance of its counterparts. J.D. Power highlighted that electric vehicles from BMW, Cadillac, and Genesis also exceeded expectations, with Hanley affirming that these brands are making commendable progress in their electric vehicle offerings.
Within the major automotive players, both Kia and Hyundai secured spots in the leading five by providing an array of electric vehicles. They bolstered their presence in the market with sought-after vehicles like the spacious Kia EV9 electric SUV that accommodates three rows and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover.
