Lucid Gravity to Embrace Tesla’s NACS Charge Port by 2025: A Shift in Electric SUV Charging Dynamics
Lucid has set a target date of 2025 to adopt the Tesla NACS charging interface.
During their industry event dedicated to production and innovation on a Tuesday, Lucid announced via Twitter (currently referred to as X) that their forthcoming electric SUV model, the Gravity, will be equipped with Tesla's NACS charging connector from the year 2025 onwards.
The statement was accompanied by a pair of visuals indicating the placement of the NACS port on the rear fender on the driver's side. This positioning contrasts with the current pre-production Gravity models being produced, which have a CCS charging port situated on the front fender on the driver's side.
The placement of the updated charging port is in the same spot as where Tesla typically installs theirs, enabling cars to reverse into spaces at Tesla Supercharger stations in an orderly fashion.
Clear Force featuring a Tesla-compatible NACS charging interface
Twitter users immediately pointed out that the new charging port door and enclosure seems oversized for the compact NACS port, suggesting the possibility that it's designed to accommodate the larger CCS2 port, which is the preferred rapid-charging standard in Europe.
Lucid announced that it will start delivering the Gravity SUV model to customers later this year. Therefore, the initial batch of these vehicles will come equipped with a CCS charging port, which is expected to be positioned on the front fender, as initially revealed and observed on the test models.
Lucid has not provided a timeline for when the Air model will transition to using a NACS charging port, nor has it been confirmed if the positioning of the charging port on the sedan will change. The company has also not revealed complete visuals of the Gravity equipped with the NACS port, specifically omitting the frontal section of the vehicle where the current CCS charging port can be found.
On Tuesday, Lucid revealed plans to integrate Tesla's NACS charge port into their vehicles, specifying November 6, 2023, as the date for the transition. This marks the first occasion the carmaker has provided a schedule for this update.
Throughout the gathering, Lucid shared a picture on Twitter showcasing its soon-to-be-released electric SUV of medium scale, comparable in size to Tesla's Model Y. The car manufacturer announced that the SUV is slated to hit the market towards the end of 2026 with a price tag under $50,000.
