Love’s Fast-Track to the Future: Expanding EV Charging for Road Trippers with Federal Boost
Love's Travel Stops is expanding its electric vehicle charging stations, partly thanks to federal investments from President Biden's infrastructure plan.
Love's declared on Tuesday that construction is commencing on two innovative charging locations in Ripley and Waterloo, New York. Both sites will be equipped with two dual-port DC rapid charging stations, providing a combined total of four charging points, each delivering a minimum of 160 kw of power. Additionally, all forthcoming Love's Travel Stops are being designed with designated areas for electric vehicle charging.
Charging points for electric vehicles at Love's Travel Stops now feature Electrify
Since 2017, Love's has been implementing electric vehicle charging stations, and in 2020, they collaborated with Electrify America to incorporate charging stops for travelers at their facilities. Presently, the company boasts over 100 charging units across 28 stores in 11 different states. This collection comprises both Level 2 AC charging stations and DC rapid charging stations. However, moving forward, the company plans to construct only rapid charging stations, which will be sheltered by canopies for protection.
Love's has announced it successfully obtained financial support from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program to help finance a portion of its upcoming electric vehicle charging stations. The NEVI program, established by the infrastructure legislation of 2021, has dedicated $7.5 billion towards the creation of a nationwide grid of half a million charging stations across 75,000 miles of American highways. This funding is distributed on a state-by-state basis. Love's reportedly ranks within the top three companies in terms of the amount of funding it has been awarded.

Love's has announced that construction of four new charging stations in Pennsylvania and another four in Kentucky, financed through the NEVI program, is set to commence this year. Plans are also in place to begin building more NEVI-supported stations across Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington starting in 2025. This development is a positive indication, particularly considering the federal charging network's somewhat sluggish expansion up to now.
Love's highlights advantages such as closeness to major roads, available facilities on the premises, and round-the-clock personnel as benefits of integrating electric vehicle charging stations at its travel stops. Similarly, Pilot Travel Centers are creating a rapid EV charging grid in collaboration with General Motors. The network's initial phase of 17 sites commenced operations in 2023, with an estimated total of 200 locations expected to be functional by the close of 2024.
