Karma Unveils Ivara SUV Concept and Plans for PHEV Expansion at Monterey Car Week

Karma Automotive showcased their new Ivara SUV prototype on Friday at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering – a top event during the 2024 Monterey Car Week in California that took place the previous week. They also announced intentions to expand their plug-in hybrid electric vehicle lineup.

Accompanying it at Karma's display was the earlier unveiled Kaveya sports car along with the Gyesera sport sedan. The Kaveya, presented in Monterey, featured an updated interior which Karma stated reflects the design intended for the final product.

The Ivara, a sport utility vehicle, boasts a stylish design reminiscent of a coupe and is expected to transition into a market-ready model by late 2027. This four-seater incorporates design aspects which Karma indicates will be prevalent in its upcoming range of vehicles.

Karma has announced that its upcoming Ivara model will be available with both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid options. While Karma has not disclosed the specific plug-in hybrid technology it will employ, it is expected to utilize a series plug-in hybrid system akin to the one currently used in its Revero sedan.

The Revero is equipped with two electric motors situated at the back which together produce 536 horsepower. Additionally, there's a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine from BMW positioned at the front, which functions solely to charge the battery. Karma predicts that on battery power alone, the car can travel for 80 miles, and when utilizing the gasoline engine, it can exceed 360 miles.

The firm originally intended to exclusively introduce electric cars after the Revero model, however, with the decreasing interest in electric vehicles, it appears Karma will probably incorporate additional plug-in hybrid electric vehicle engines.

The Gyesera might also introduce a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) option. Initially set to debut this year as an all-electric vehicle, the sedan's release plans could change to incorporate a PHEV system, according to Karma's head Marques McCammon during a discussion with Automotive News (access only with subscription) at the unveiling of the Ivara.

"He mentioned that they've taken the market's feedback into account and are utilizing their adaptability. He indicated that there will be alterations to the Gyesera platform which he believes will be well-received by the market."

Currently, the Kaveya is set to be available solely with an electric battery powertrain. The anticipated release date for this sports vehicle is 2026, and it is expected to deliver as much as 1,000 horsepower. Karma has indicated that the base model will be priced at approximately $300,000.

During the Monterey Car Week, Karma revealed that their new model, the Kaveya, will embody the concept of a software-defined vehicle (SDV), which incorporates technology crafted in collaboration with Intel. An SDV is fundamentally a car that is outfitted with the necessary software and hardware capabilities to facilitate updates remotely, possibly for the duration of the vehicle's life.

Karma emerged from the defunct Fisker Automotive, which collapsed financially in 2013. At present, Karma's solo offering is the Revero, an extensively revamped edition of the previous Fisker Karma. A couple of years back, Karma had ambitions to roll out both high-end and commercial vehicles, but it has since shifted gears to concentrate solely on the luxury market, with an emphasis on customizable options.

The company aims to establish itself as a high-end luxury brand in the United States, similar to the prestige Duesenberg held over a hundred years ago. The manufacturing of the latest Karma models will take place at their facility located in Moreno Valley, California, which is also where the Revero is currently produced.
