The Kalmar 9×9: A Tribute to the Porsche 959 with Double the Power
This restomod will make its debut in Monterey, with potential deliveries starting next year
Without explicitly mentioning Porsche, Kalmar Automotive has introduced a green vehicle that clearly draws inspiration from the iconic brand. The connections are evident – the distinctive central section, the sloping roofline, and the wide, flat rear spoiler. Not to mention, it's called the 9×9. Kalmar claims it's the "world's first retro hypercar," unmistakably influenced by the Porsche 959.
It's uncertain if it lives up to the legacy of its renowned namesake. Yet, Kalmar Automotive has established a notable presence in the racing community. In recent times, Kalmar Automotive declared the introduction of the 9×9 on their Porsche race cars at Le Mans, and the Danish firm has also launched the 7-97 series, which is derived from the iconic 911.

The 9×9, which was developed over several years, incorporates all of these experiences and was revealed to the global public for the first time at The Quail during the Monterey Car Week.
If the goal is to create a vintage hypercar that nods to the 959, kicking things off with a turbocharged boxer engine delivering 930 horsepower in the rear is a solid choice. The 3.8-liter engine directs power through a dual-clutch transmission to all four wheels, although the source of the transmission is not disclosed.
For those who find that too overwhelming, Kalmar offers a 9×9 Sport variant equipped with a 650 horsepower engine and a seven-speed manual transmission. Alternatively, one can opt for the 9×9 Lightweight – a more nimble version featuring a six-speed manual gearbox paired with a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine powering only the rear wheels. The exact power output isn't specified, however, Kalmar reveals that the Lightweight model tips the scales at 1,250 kilograms.
Every 9×9 model boasts a full carbon fiber body atop a tailor-made double-wishbone pushrod suspension with adjustable dampers and rear-wheel steering. It's equipped with 3D-printed titanium brake calipers paired with ceramic discs, situated behind magnesium wheels. Special focus has been placed on aerodynamics to strike an optimal balance between a vintage aesthetic and sufficient downforce for the racetrack.
The interior of the vehicle accommodates two individuals with minimal extra space. The primary focus of the 9×9 is to deliver an exceptional driving experience, thus it lacks an infotainment system or even a radio. However, it does feature LCD screens for the driver's display and an integrated roll cage concealed within the cockpit. Stability and traction controls are also included, so it's not entirely devoid of modern technology.
Kalmar Automotive has not disclosed any details about the cost or manufacturing process, yet the company aims to commence deliveries to customers by July 2025.
