Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision: Championship Lead Grows Post-Aragon Drama
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia failed to finish after a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian rider's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, and Martin experienced yet another weekend with two second-place finishes. Martin has consistently taken second place in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a slow beginning, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and closed in on Marquez's back wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. In an attempt to capitalize on this, Bagnaia also got involved, leading to a collision between the two at turn 13.
During the press conference held after the race, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he noticeably hesitated to strongly support any particular side.
"It's not easy," Martin mentioned. "You ought to question Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Certainly, it's hard to view clearly since there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex was unable to lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2. Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez, which ultimately led to contact."
"I hope they’re alright, as it looked like they were near the bikes after the accident. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical facility where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia participated in the race with a leg injury he sustained during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
