Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Clash as Championship Race Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved significantly during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, as he maintained his impressive performance and Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin entered Aragon lagging behind Bagnaia by five points in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two more second-place finishes, making it six consecutive races where he has come in second since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia managed to work his way up the field and caught up to Marquez with seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. When Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to take a strong stance either way.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Undoubtedly, it was hard to see clearly because there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed during the last lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this led to a collision."
"I hope they're alright, as they appeared to be near the bikes following the crash. I wish them well for the upcoming race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained during the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he faces a similar situation, having just one week to recover from Aragon before competing at Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both races in 2023. This year, the Spaniard holds a 23-point lead in the championship as he heads into his rival's home event.
