Jorge Martin Speaks Out on Pecco Bagnaia-Alex Marquez Aragon Crash Amidst Championship Shake-Up
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved significantly at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his steady performance, while Francesco Bagnaia's hopes took a hit after he fell during the race.
Martin came to Aragon five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This gap followed Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of scoring points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing second in every race, making it six consecutive runner-up finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish beginning, Bagnaia worked his way up the field, eventually reaching Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it's hard to observe clearly since there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't tilt further, similar to Joe Roberts' situation in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was contact."
"I hope they are alright since it appeared they were near the bikes after the crash. I wish them a swift recovery for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans confirmed no bone fractures. However, the Italian racer mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury he sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will also have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who emerged victorious in both 2023 races. The Spanish rider now heads into his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
