Jake Dixon’s Remarkable Climb from 14th to 5th Fuels Moto2 Title Hopes
"Moving from 14th to 5th feels like a victory": Jake Dixon boosts his Moto2 title hopes late in the season.
"If we had started in the first two rows, I believe we could have competed for a podium finish…"
Jake Dixon expressed immense satisfaction with his performance, moving from 14th to 5th place in the 13th round of the 2024 Moto2 World Championship in Misano. This achievement keeps him on track for a late push for this year's riders' championship.
The British racer, who didn't earn any points in the first five rounds due to an injury at the Qatar Moto2 season opener, has been climbing the overall rankings recently thanks to a series of impressive performances.
After securing his second victory of the season in Aragon only a week ago, Dixon faced a challenge at the San Marino Moto2. Riding for the CFMoto Aspar Team Kalex, he ended up starting from the 14th position on the fifth row following the qualifying session in Misano.
Despite starting further back, the rider from Kent showed impressive performance in the latter half of the race, maneuvering his way up to finish in fifth place. Given that Ai Ogura was the only competitor in the top five to earn more points than him, the British rider felt content with his final standing.
He expressed to TNT Sports that he considers it a victory given their starting point.
“This weekend was quite challenging. I struggled to maneuver the bike to the right spots, as it resisted going into certain areas. I focused on staying in the race from the start, knowing that I would gain strength towards the end.”
"If we had started in the first two rows, I believe we could have contended for a podium finish, but it just didn't happen. I managed to secure the highest points possible from our position, and I am extremely pleased with that."
Despite losing two points and the lead in the standings to Ogura, the new points leader, Dixon is still close enough to contend for the title in the final seven events.
Consequently, despite the 45-point deficit to Ogura, he is now only three points behind Alonso Lopez and Joe Roberts, who are both tied for third place overall.
Dixon will have another opportunity to excel at Misano as the Moto2 series continues with a subsequent race at the same location later this month, due to the cancellation of the scheduled Kazakhstan and Indian MotoGP events.
"We are aiming to be more robust next week; we can't repeat what happened this weekend."
