Marquez Cautiously Eyes 2024 Title Amid Mistakes: A Closer Look at the MotoGP Champion’s Road to Redemption
Marc Marquez admits his excessive errors may cost him a chance at the 2024 championship
What is the eight-time world champion's evaluation of his potential for winning the championship?
Marc Marquez remains open to the possibility of contending for the 2024 MotoGP world title, yet he emphasizes the importance of avoiding the errors he made during the San Marino Grand Prix.
The Ducati racer from Gresini is currently just 53 points away from the top spot in the championship, held by Jorge Martin, following Marquez's impressive rise from ninth position on the starting grid to clinch his second victory of the season, despite challenging weather conditions.
With 259 points still available in the next seven races, and favorable tracks ahead for Marquez, he has emerged as a more significant contender in the pursuit of the championship.
Following the second-quarter mishap that resulted in a ninth-place finish at Misano, combined with additional blunders in recent races that have cost him points, Marquez acknowledges the need to eliminate such mistakes to remain competitive.
"Anything's possible," he said in response to whether the championship appeared more attainable at this point.
"Particularly when traveling outside of Europe, into Asia, you become aware of the varying conditions there."
"However, I maintain my mindset: to compete for the championship, we cannot begin from ninth position on the grid."
"We must avoid the errors I made during the qualification trials. It's essential that we continue to progress and enhance our performance, which is my goal for the upcoming fortnight here."
Current world champion Francesco Bagnaia, who trails Martin by seven points following San Marino, states that Marquez remains a contender for the championship title.
He highlighted his varying performance at Misano as evidence, while also emphasizing that his Ducati teammate, Enea Bastianini, should not be overlooked in the championship contest.
Bagnaia commented on the uncertainty surrounding Marquez's chances for the championship when questioned.
"Consider my current position. Yesterday [following the sprint], I trailed by 26 points, and now I'm only seven behind."
"Thus, situations can shift rapidly. This applies to Marc as well as to Enea."
"Marc's capabilities are evident, and it seems he has rediscovered the form he showcased during the early stages of the tournament."
"Therefore, always consider Marc a contender for the title. Likewise, never discount Enea from the title race. Absolutely not. We'll aim to consistently replicate today's performance."
Marquez, after clinching victories in the most recent two Grand Prix events, believes he is nearing a consistent competitive form similar to that of 2019, the year he secured his sixth title in the premier class.
Nevertheless, he mentions that there are "a few areas of improvement" he needs to work on.
"He mentioned that the years 2019 and 2021 were relatively good."
During a stretch in 2021, which included Aragon, Austin, and Misano, the performance was quite decent.
"Indeed, under the typical circumstances experienced over the weekend, it marked a progression from '19… actually, 19 represented yet another leap forward."
"I believe that I have the ability to maneuver my body, which allows me to engage more with the motorcycle.
"There remain some areas for improvement, particularly in the sector of Turns 11 and 12 at Misano, where Pecco really excels. We must figure out before the upcoming weekend – acknowledging that I won't outpace him – if it's possible to narrow the gap."
"However, there remain aspects to uncover, yet with each surge of confidence, one finds themselves more agile and swift in their movements."
