Italy Clashes with EU on ‘Absurd’ 2035 Gas-Engine Ban, Seeks Earlier Review Amid Auto Industry Slowdown
Italian authorities are calling the EU's proposed prohibition on gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035 "ridiculous" and are urging for an earlier reassessment of the strategy to phase out new petrol and diesel car sales by that year.
Italian Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, during an interview with Automotive News Europe at the TEHA business forum in Cernobbio, located by Italy's Lake Como, insisted on the need for amendments to the ban. He labeled the current prohibition as "ridiculous," stemming from an "ideological viewpoint," and emphasized the necessity for adjustments in response to the diverse market conditions that have emerged due to the European automotive sector's decline.

Italy's Minister of Industry, Adolfo Urso, has proposed an advancement of the scheduled review of compliance with the more rigorous emission standards that are essential to the prohibition on internal combustion engines. He suggests this evaluation should occur in the upcoming year rather than in 2026. Urso emphasizes that the European Union must adopt a practical approach to the evolution of the automotive sector.
The existing conservative administration in Italy under Giorgia Meloni is advocating for increased autonomy among EU nations regarding the selection of technology to achieve carbon reduction targets. Additionally, they seek a slower transition away from vehicles with combustion engines, as reported by Automotive News Europe. However, this extension isn't necessary for several Northern European and Scandinavian territories, which are already experiencing significant adoption of plug-in vehicles.

The proposal to phase out internal combustion engines by the year 2035 was initially put forward in 2021, alongside aggressive reductions in emissions leading up to that point. However, in 2023, the policy was relaxed following Germany's persuasive advocacy for an exemption for cars powered by e-fuels. These artificial fuels are promoted for their potential to have reduced carbon emissions compared to traditional gasoline or diesel. Some car manufacturers, such as Italy's Ferrari, consider these fuels to be a lifeline for preserving internal-combustion vehicles.
There isn't a unified strategy across the United States for discontinuing the use of combustion engines. According to regulatory predictions, existing emissions regulations might result in electric vehicles accounting for 67% of sales by 2032. However, these regulations are at risk of being repealed should the Republican Party triumph in the forthcoming elections. Meanwhile, California has established rigorous emissions standards set for 2035, effectively halting the sale of the majority of vehicles powered by combustion engines, except for plug-in hybrids capable of traveling 50 miles.
