Ferrari Accelerates into the Future with Dedicated Electric Car Factory and First EV Launch by 2025
Ferrari has constructed a dedicated facility for the manufacturing of its inaugural electric vehicle, marking a significant expansion of its production capabilities.
The revamped manufacturing facility, now known as the "e-building," has been set up by Ferrari to create a variety of products including traditional engines, electric motors, batteries, and parts for hybrid vehicles. This flexibility will enable Ferrari to adapt its production to meet varying consumer demand for standard gasoline vehicles, hybrid models, and fully electric cars, according to a statement released by the company.
Ferrari's electronic facility
Ferrari aims to run the facility solely on sustainable energy, drawing from outside and in-house resources. This includes over 3,000 rooftop solar panels which produce a total of 1.3 megawatts, as per Ferrari's statement. Additionally, the car manufacturer asserts that they can reclaim over 60% of the energy expended during battery and motor trials for alternative applications.
According to Ferrari, the new building utilizes equipment to collect rainwater, reducing the need for fresh water and causing minimal disturbance to the local environment. Located to the north of Ferrari's current campus in Maranello, Italy, the facility stands on regenerated property, taking the place of previous industrial buildings.
Ferrari's electronic infrastructure
A mere ten years back, Ferrari firmly opposed the idea of producing an electric vehicle. However, the company is on track to release its inaugural EV in 2025. According to a latest study, the cost could exceed $500,000. This positions the upcoming electric vehicle at the more expensive range of Ferrari's offerings, surpassing the price of the existing SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid and the Purosangue SUV.
In line with its strategy for petrol engines, Ferrari plans to create its own electric motors, inverters, and batteries. However, for battery technology, Ferrari is collaborating with SK On, a battery manufacturer. They have an existing agreement for providing batteries for Ferrari's current plug-in hybrid models, and in March, they revealed a joint venture focused on the development of sophisticated battery cells.
