EVgo Charges Ahead: Expanding and Enhancing the Reliability of America’s EV Charging Network
EVgo is focused on enhancing the dependability of their charging stations through the implementation of advanced equipment and comprehensive diagnostic procedures.
EVgo has issued a statement announcing advancements in modernizing its network of public charging stations. The firm reports that since 2022, it has either updated, swapped out, or retired outdated technology at upwards of 500 locations across more than 20 states. Looking ahead, there are intentions to carry out similar updates at an additional 150 locations in the year 2024.
EVgo is aiming to boost its 350-kW charging station count by 115% within the year and reports an over 80% rise in locations that can charge a minimum of six vehicles, compared to the previous year. The firm is focusing on creating additional sites that can accommodate charging for up to 10 vehicles.
Charging points by EVgo
EVgo has reportedly cut down the duration it takes to fix broken chargers by two-thirds since early 2023. The improvement comes from innovative software that recognizes issues swiftly by monitoring for disruptions in the charge cable's signal, which often suggests a malfunction, the firm states.
EVgo has introduced an innovative diagnostic software and reports comprehensive compatibility assessments across over 70 types of electric vehicles, ranging from personal vehicles and motorcycles to light and heavy-duty trucks. With the widespread embrace of Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) and increased entry to its Supercharger network predicted to enhance dependability for numerous EV users, the key advancements may actually stem from improved compatibility.
General Motors and Pilot Company's electric vehicle charging infrastructure
As of now, EVgo boasts a network that includes in excess of 1,000 direct current rapid-charging stations spread out over 35 states. In 2021, the firm joined forces with General Motors to enhance the availability of rapid charging facilities in city environments. Moving into 2022, they disclosed a new partnership with GM aiming to set up as many as 500 350-kilowatt DC rapid chargers at various Pilot and Flying J travel stops.
Enhanced dependability is key for EVgo to maintain its market position in the face of emerging ventures such as Ionna, which is an EV charging initiative supported by seven car manufacturers aiming to install at least 30,000 high-speed rapid charging stations across North America by the end of the decade. Moreover, the federal administration is scrutinizing charger dependability more rigorously as it allocates resources for a countrywide electric vehicle charging grid under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) scheme.
