Espargaro Bets on Martin to Deliver Aprilia’s First MotoGP Title After Stunning Ducati Snub
Aleix Espargaro is confident enough to bet on Jorge Martin securing the MotoGP championship for Aprilia, as he views Martin as the crucial element the team requires to clinch the title.
In a surprising turn of events, Aprilia successfully secured a deal with MotoGP series leader Jorge Martin, despite expectations that he was set to join Francesco Bagnaia as his teammate at Ducati.
The honor was instead given to Marc Marquez, who is set to become a part of the Lenovo Ducati team in 2025. Meanwhile, Martin will take over from Aleix Espargaro, who plans to retire at the end of this season.
Espargaro played a crucial role in persuading Martin to join Aprilia. He acknowledges that he made a significant effort to convince Martin on the Sunday night after the Italian MotoGP at Mugello.
Espargaro commented that it was a rather unusual circumstance. Following the race, Jorge and his manager came to understand that moving to Ducati wasn't as straightforward as they had believed.
"He began discussions with various brands and manufacturers, eventually arriving at my motorhome. We conversed until midnight as I endeavored to persuade him that Aprilia was his best choice, given the team's immense potential and his remarkable talent."
"I realized that Aprilia was the ideal spot for him. I persuaded him, and Massimo efficiently arranged everything in no time."
"It was an unexpected but wonderful chance for Aprilia. Personally, having Jorge ride my bike next year is a dream come true."
When inquired about whether he believed Martin would turn Aprilia into title contenders, Espargaro expressed complete confidence.
Espargaro stated, "I'm willing to bet on it. Ever since I became part of Aprilia eight years ago, we've been continuously progressing."
"I've secured several victories over the past few years, and he possesses immense talent, a strong drive, and youth on his side."
All of Noale is thrilled to have one of the top riders in the competition.
Although Aprilia has successfully signed Martin for the upcoming two seasons, they have encountered challenges in finalizing a deal with Maverick Vinales.
Vinales is still considering his future, but acknowledges that Martin's inclusion has brought him joy for the Italian brand.
"I'm pleased for Martin and for Aprilia," Vinales commented. "He is a talented racer and is demonstrating significant potential on the Ducati."
“I’m pleased for the team as they deserve another leading rider. I’m glad Aprilia managed to secure Martin at the last moment. We’ll see how things go next year.”
